FMRI Consortium Partner Visits FAU

December 11, 2017, Boca Raton, FL

Dr. Evangelos I. Kaisar, director of the FMRI, welcomed Dr. Lily Elefteriadou, director of the Transportation Institute at UF, to the laboratory facilities at FAU's Boca Raton campus. FMRI members presented their work and discussed the future work scope of the institute. Dr. Elefteriadou also gave a guest lecture hosted by the FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science. The title of her presentation was "Traffic Signal Control with Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in the Traffic Stream."

FMRI Researcher Presented at the 5th Annual Florida Automated Vehicles Summit

November 14 - 15, 2017, Tampa, FL

The 2017 FAV Summit focused on four areas of mobility: automated, connected, electric, and shared (ACES) vehicles. Industry leaders from around the world attended to address technologies, operations, and policy issues. The mission of the summit is to gain insight into what Florida is doing to create the ideal climate for the implementation and deployment of autonomous and connected vehicle technologies. FMRI research associate, Bratislav Ostojic, presented his master's thesis research involving the integration of the driving simulator in a connected vehicle environment.

FMRI Partners Participate in 7th METRANS International Urban Freight Conference

October 17 - 20, 2017, Long Beach, CA

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI gave two presentations, titled "Formal Analysis of Delays in Waterway System Operations with Timed Automata Modeling," and "A Smart Port Resiliency Assessment and Planning Tool,". Dr. Miguel Figliozzi, PSU professor, gave a presentation titled "Modeling Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones) Costs Tradeoffs" at the conference. The partners also discussed current and future projects of the FMRI.

FMRI Director Discusses Collaborations with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)

June 29, 2017, Athens, Greece

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI met with professors from the Civil Engineering and Surveying Engineering Departments of NTUA regarding future research collaborations and educational activities. Kaisar presented the FMRI's first year projects and attended an undergraduate student's thesis defense about transportation engineering.

FMRI Partners Participate in 5th IEEE International Conference

June 26 - 28, 2017, Naples, Italy

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI and Dr. John Hourdos, research associate professor in the University of Minnesota, represented the FMRI at the 5th IEEE Int'l Conference on Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Dr. Kaisar presented about "Guidance for Identifying Corridor Conditions that Warrant Deploying Transit Signal Priority and Queue Jump" and submitted a research paper on the same subject. The topics of the conference included ITS - oriented traffic planning, operations and management, ITS and smart cities, ITS multimodal transportation and freight systems, future mobility data collection for passenger and freight, automated and intelligent vehicles, current issues in transportation energy and climate change.

FMRI Graduate Students Participated in the Florida Section ITE Summer Meeting (FSITE)

June 21 - 23, 2017, Naples, FL

FMRI graduate students MD Sultan Ali and Luis Zerpa gave a presentation titled, "Guidance for Implementing Transit Signal Priority" at the Florida Section ITE Summer Meeting. Students also participated in the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl and attended various presentations related to traffic operations and planning.

FMRI Representatives Participate in the 2017 Council of University Transportation Center (CUTC) Annual Meeting

June 19 - 21, 2017, Buffalo, NY

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI, and Lynn Asseff, director of operations in FAU's College of Engineering and Computer Science, attended the meeting to discuss future collaborations with other leading transportation professionals in attendance that represented members from academia, business and government agencies. The three-day event featured distinguished speakers including keynote addresses, presentations, panels, and guided discussions covering a broad range of topics related to transportation. A portion of the program was managed by the UTC program staff from the US DOT Office of the assistant secretary for research and technology.

FMRI Holds the First Meeting with Partners at FAU

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI held the first meeting with all members of the partner institutions of the FMRI. Also, in attendance were staff from the US Department of Transportation. The subject of the first meeting was the progress of the current projects and a discussion about future research projects.

FMRI Director Attends Midyear Transportation Research Board Meeting

May 16, 2017, Irvine, CA

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI, participated in the meeting at Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences Engineering. The 2017 Innovations in Freight Data Workshop brought together freight data users and decision makers to learn and share the latest applications of emerging “big” freight data sources to improve freight planning, freight operations, and mobility of freight visualization. The event convened traditional freight planning stakeholders, as well as data and technology innovators from related areas whose expertise can be leveraged to advance the state-of-the-practice. Presenters included both practitioners sharing their state-of-the-art applications and researchers working on the cutting edge to develop next-generation data applications and analysis tools. In addition to showcasing best practices, the event also served as an opportunity to identify future research needs and opportunities for collaboration.

FMRI Initiates Possible Collaborations with West Boca Raton Community High School

The director of the FMRI, Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, visited the West Boca Raton Community High School principal, along with Craig Sommer. Participants discussed future educational and outreach collaborative activities and opportunities for students and teachers at the school and the FMRI at Florida Atlantic University.

FMRI Welcomes FDOT Mobility Division to FAU

The director of the FMRI, Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, visited the Florida Department of Transportation facilities. In the meeting, Dr. Kaisar presented the progress and goals of the Institute and discussed future collaborations with FDOT representatives.

FMRI Participates in Florida Chamber of Commerce Florida Trade and Logistics Institute

March 29, 2017, Lakeland, FL

FMRI's director participated in the Florida Chamber of Commerce Florida Trade and Logistics Institute meeting. The main topic of the meeting was to discuss the increasing number of academic programs in logistics and supply chain management and the commitment to building a talent supply chain that expands Florida's position as a leader in international trade. In addition, Dr. Kaisar presented the current progress of the Institute and participated in a higher education discussion with other professors.

FMRI Representatives Present Transportation Topics to FAU High School Students

February 1, 2017, Boca Raton, FL

Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, director of the FMRI, was invited by Dr. Tricia Meredith, director of FAU High School Research programs to discuss his expertise in the transportation engineering field and share his knowledge of the freight industry to the FAU high school students. In addition, FMRI graduate research assistants, MD Sultan Ali and Luis Zerpa, presented their work regarding port operations. The visit ended with a tour of the automated vehicles in the FAU high school lab.

FMRI Researchers Attend 96th Annual Transportation Research Board Meeting

January 8 - 12, 2017, Washington, DC

The 96th TRB Annual Meeting was held at Walter E. Washington Convention Center, with over 12,000 transportation professionals from around the world. The theme was "Transportation Innovation: Leading the Way in an Era of Rapid Change". The meeting covered all transportation modes, with more than 5,000 presentations in nearly 750 sessions and workshops, addressing topics of interest to all attendees - policymakers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.
