FMRI Sponsors FDOT District 4 Technical Tour November 15, 2023, Boca Raton, FL FMRI researchers and students from the CEGE Department at FAU had the opportunity to participate in a technical tour of the FDOT District 4 in Fort Lauderdale, FL accompanied by Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, Chair of the CEGE Department and Dr. David Kan, Assistant Professor. The participants were introduced to sections of the building by Ms. Natacha Placide, RTMC Public Outreach Coordinator at AECOM, Ms. Nicole Forest, FDOT District Four TSM&O Resource Manager, Traffic Operations and Ms. Dee McTague, Operations Manager at AECOM.
2023 CEGE Infrastructure Night November 8, 2023, Boca Raton, FL The Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering (CEGE) at FAU hosted the 2023 Infrastructure Night on the Boca Raton Campus on November 8th 2023. The ITE and WTS Student Chapter in conjunction with FMRI research group played a vital role in the organization of the event. The event was a success story for the Transportation Industry in South East Florida, gathering more than 45 consultant companies in different fields of engineering. The Infrastructure Night was a great opportunity for professionals to interact with people from academia and the students. The event hosted guest speakers and panels from academia and industry where insightful conversations focused on the current and future projects/scenario of engineering were initiated. Mr. Paul A. Lampley, P.E. at FDOT was a keynote speaker at the event.
Dr. Evangelos Kaisar Was a Keynote Speaker at the International Conference ITS2023: Intelligent Systems and Consciousness Society November 2-3, 2023, Patras, Greece FMRI Director, Dr. Evangelos Kaisar had the opportunity to be a keynote speaker in the ITS2023: Intelligent Systems and Consciousness Society conference in Patras, Greece. Dr. Kaisar talked about "Freight Transportation: Noteworthy Practices from Europe and US". Dr. Petros Ioannou, A.V. "Bal" Balakrishnan, Chair from University of Southern California was also a keynote speaker at the conference. The event was organized by the University of Patras, Department of Civil Engineering, in cooperation with ITS Hellas. The conference focused on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), highlighting their role in ensuring efficient and safe movement in smart cities.
FMRI Hosts Dr. Robert Edelstein and Ms. Aline Machado from AECOM for a Guest Lecture October 26, 2023, Boca Raton, FL Students taking the TTE 6507 Transportation and Supply Chain Systems at FAU had the great opportunity of having Dr. Robert Edelstein and Ms. Aline Machado come to campus and lecture in their class as guest speakers on October 26 as guest speakers. The event was organized by Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, chair of the CEGE Department and Instructor of the TTE 6507 course. Participants were able to learn about FDOT’s TMC Academy, which refers to a TSM&O training program divided by modules that focus on specific areas such as TSM&O Overview, Safety Improvement, Freight Management, among others.
President of ITE FAU Student Chapter, Ms. Jasmine Hadi, Accepts Multiple Awards While Representing the Chapter at the Florida Puerto Rico District of ITE Annual Meeting October 26, 2023, St. Petersburg, FL The current president of the ITE FAU Student Chapter, Ms. Jasmine Hadi, undergraduate researcher at FMRI had the opportunity to participate in the Florida Puerto Rico District of ITE Annual Meeting of 2023. Ms. Hadi was awarded the Pete Yauch Student Volunteer of the Year Scholarship Award as well as winning first place in the 2023 FLPRITE ‘Andrew Velasquez’ Shark tank Competition. Jasmine also accepted the Student Chapter Momentum Award on behalf of FAU ITE Student Chapter.
FMRI at the 5th Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) Conference on Urban Freight October 18-20, 2023, Gothenburg, Sweden The FMRI Director Dr. Evangelos Kaisar had the opportunity to participate in the VREF Conference. He was able to meet with the professionals and researchers in the field, as well as attend to informative workshops. Evangelos also participated in a poster session where he presented a research titled "Improving the Efficiency of Heavy Truck Flow Outside Intermodal Facilities: A Proof of Concept Addressing Transportation Issues and Conducting Microsimulation-Based Traffic Impact Study".
ITE FAU Student Chapter Hosts Mr. Nathan George, Lead Planner of the Long Range Transportation Plan October 13, 2023, Boca Raton, FL The ITE FAU Student Chapter hosted guest speaker, Mr. Nathan George, AICP, Lead Planner of the Long Range Transportation Plan at Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency (TPA) on October 13th. Mr. George presented the Long Range Transportation Plan and it’s 25-year vision for Palm Beach County.
Port Everglades Tour Hosted by the South Florida Section of ITE September 27, 2023, Fort Lauderdale, FL ITE FAU members had the opportunity to attend the Port Everglades Technical Tour hosted by the South Florida Section of ITE on September 27th. The students had an incredible time learning more about the Port's Operations and Logistics as well as being able to witness operations such as container loading in person.
ITE FAU Student Chapter Hosts Ms. Alexandra Lopez from the FDOT District 4 September 22, 2023, Boca Raton, FL The ITE FAU Student Chapter also hosted its third General Body Meeting of Fall 2023 on September 22nd. This time, students had the opportunity to welcome Ms. Alexandra Lopez, P.E., PTOE, Transportation Systems Management & Operations Program Manager at FDOT, District 4, as their guest speaker. Ms. Lopez presented about the challenges in implementing traffic operational improvements for transportation agencies.
ITE FAU Student Chapter Hosts Mr. Omar K. Al-sahili and Mr. Kyle K. Cheerangie From HNTB September 13, 2023, Boca Raton, FL The ITE FAU Student Chapter hosted guest speakers Mr. Omar K. Al-Sahili, PE and Mr. Kyle K. Cheerangie, P.E. from HNTB. The professionals presented about they've learned in their first 10 years of being Engineers. Students were excited and able to engage in an insightful presentation where they learned more about how to better prepare themselves for their future careers.
26th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems ITSC 2023 September 24-28, 2023, Bilbao, Spain FMRI Director Dr. Evangelos Kaisar, along with Dr. Yulong Zhang, participated at the conference that was marked with insightful workshops and presentations, as well as the presence of big names in the field of Transportation, being the companies or the professionals themselves. Dr. Evangelos Kaisar was the organizer for the workshop titled "Smart Freight Transportation: Last–Mile Logistics Challenges in the “New Normal”" along with Dr. Petros A. Ioannou and Dr. Dimitrios Dimitriou. In addition, Dr. David Kan from FAU presented his research in one of the workshops titled "5th Workshop on Autonomous, Connected and Electrified Mobility Systems: Towards Human-centered Paradigms" with an analytical presentation about "Electric Vehicles with Adaptive Cruise Control Experiments."
FMRI Director Dr. Evangelos Kaisar Attended the 11th International Congress on Transportation Research in Heraklion, Greece September 20-22, 2023, Heraklion, Greece The FMRI Director, Dr. Evangelos Kaisar had the opportunity to participate in the 11th International Congress on Transportation Research that took place in Heraklion, Greece in September. The event featured a variety of workshops and discussions focused on sustainable, safe and inclusive transport solutions as well as the challenges of clean and accessible multimodal transport systems. At the event, Evangelos met with researcher and former student Katerina Koliou from the National Technical University of Athens.
ITE FAU Student Chapter Hosts the Second General Body Meeting for the Fall 2023 Semester September 2023, Boca Raton, FL The ITE FAU Student Chapter hosted the Second General Body Meeting for the Fall 2023 Semester. This event featured the distinguished guest speakers Mr. Omar K. Al-Sahili, PE and Mr. Kyle K. Cheerangie, P.E. from HNTB! Participating students and chapter members had the opportunity to learn more about what the Transportation Industry has to offer, and how to better prepare for their future careers. This event had over 50 attendees with a diverse group of both undergraduate and graduate students.
ITE FAU 1st Fall 2023 General Body Meeting August 29, 2023, Boca Raton, FL The ITE FAU Student Chapter also hosted its first General Body Meeting of Fall 2023. This event allowed members of the chapter to learn about future plans and events for the semester as well as interact and get to know each other better. The attendants participated in a traffic trivia where prizes where given to the top 3 students.
