Graduate Certificate in Addiction

For MSW students seeking specialization in the field of addiction, the Graduate Certificate in Addiction is a great way to get a jumpstart toward earning your credential as a Certified Addictions Professional (CAP) or Certified Masters-Level Addictions Professional (MCAP). Essentially, after completing the certificate program, you will have met all of the educational requirements for the MCAP with the exception of the 16 hours of training needed in supervision. You will have an additional two years after graduation to complete those remaining training hours, which are offered right here at the Sandler School of Social Work twice a year, through our Field Instruction Supervisor Training.

How to Apply

STEP 1: The internal School's Addictions Certificate applications must be submitted to Tod Marshall via email at tmarsha5@fau.edu at least four weeks before graduation to ensure your transcript is updated.

STEP 2: The registrar's application for certificate and application for degree forms must be completed and turned in to your academic advisor. These forms can be found here

  • Earns You 600 Specialized Clinical Training Hours
As part of our Graduate Certificate in Addiction, you will earn 600 internship hours in an addiction-related agency. These hours will count directly toward the related work experience required by the Florida Certification Board to receive your CAP or MCAP designation.
  • Scores a Supervisory Training Discount
The Florida Certification Board requires 16 hours of training in supervision to receive your MCAP designation. You will receive 4 hours through our approved coursework and the remaining 12 can be obtained through attending our Field Instructor Supervisory Training (F.I.S.T.). After completing our Graduate Certificate in Addiction, you will be given a vastly reduced rate on the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work F.I.S.T. training, making it infinitely easier to complete your required training hours.
