The 2016 Owl Games

Northern Technology Services hosted the third Owl Games at FAU Jupiter campus on February 6, 2016. This event provided students with an avenue to raise money for a good cause, all while having fun and engaging with both the campus and potential new students.

In addition to the great benefit of getting new people on the Jupiter campus, this event also introduces and exposes Northern Technology Services to the students of the Jupiter campus, in an effort to integrate technology into all parts of their higher education experience. Overall, the event had four major objectives:

  1. To engage the students at the Jupiter Campus in a fun campuswide activity that could enrich their campus life experience.
  2. To raise money for a not-for-profit organization that helps people in the community who have disabilities.
  3. To improve the visibility of the Jupiter Campus as a vital partner of the surrounding community, and one that is invested in its well-being.
  4. To bring prospective students (and their families) to the campus, where they could see and experience, firsthand, what FAU can offer.

The planning team partnered with a multitude of businesses and corporations, both local and global, for prizing and sponsorship, as well as various departments throughout the University. For example, Dell’s subsidiary Alienware, provided 100 Gaming Desktops, 24” monitors, TactX gaming mice, keyboards and headsets. Other sponsors contributed by providing raffle prizes or food.

A Web site was developed to promote the event. Participants to the event pre-registered in teams of five (5). Each team competed in the popular, multiplayer videogame, League of Legends. Overall, we had close to 100 players and more than 200 people throughout the day that came to support their teams. All proceeds from the event benefited a private 501(c)(3) organization called Canine Companions for Independence.
