Program Structure and Requirements
What is the difference between thesis and non-thesis options for a degree program?
If opting for the thesis option, then six of the 30 credits of your degree program must be Master's Thesis credits. While enrolled in these credits, you would be expected to meet and consult with your thesis supervisor and perform independent research with them on your thesis topic. Upon completion of your thesis project, you would be required to write a thesis and publicly defend it in front of a thesis committee consisting of your thesis supervisor and two other EECS faculty members who have agreed to serve on your committee. Writing a thesis and completing six credits of Master's Thesis is not sufficient to earn a MS degree with a thesis option, as you must also pass your public thesis defense as well as satisfactorily address any concerns that your committee members might have regarding your thesis.
When must I decide whether to pursue a thesis or non-thesis option for my degree program?
You will need to complete six credits of Master's Thesis as well as write and defense a thesis prior to completion of your degree program. It is recommended that you decide whether to pursue a thesis option when you have at least two full semesters left of your degree program.
How do I find a MS thesis advisor?
Browse the EECS Department faculty directory at https://www.fau.edu/engineering/eecs/directory/ and identify faculty who are researching topics that are of interest to you. Email these faculty about your interest in performing a MS thesis under their supervision, articulate why you are specifically interested in their recent work, attach PDF copies of your CV and transcripts, and request a time to meet with them to discuss possible projects if they are willing to supervise a MS thesis.
Do internships provide credit toward my MS degree?
No, credits toward your degree cannot be earned through internships. However, internships are highly valuable as they enable you to expand your skillset with practical experience, which will likely provide you with an advantage during your job search.
Can I transfer graduate credits from another university?
Yes, with approval. Typically, up to 6 credit hours may be transferred if they were not used toward another degree. Submit a transfer credit evaluation request to the Graduate College for review.
What’s the maximum number of credit hours I can take in a semester?
Undergraduate students: 12 credits (minimum full-time load) Graduate students: 9 credits (minimum full-time load) Graduate students typically take 9 credits and should consult their advisor if they plan to take more.
Grades, GPA, and Academic Standing
Will I be dismissed if I earned a grade point average less than 3.0 in a semester?
The important consideration is whether your cumulative (overall) grade point average (GPA) falls below a 3.0, not whether your term GPA falls below a 3.0. FAU's policy is that graduate degrees can only be conferred if the cumulative GPA is at least 3.0. If your cumulative GPA falls below 3.0, then the department can decide to either (1) initiate dismissal or (2) provide you with one semester to recover your cumulative GPA to at least a 3.0. If the department provides you with an additional semester to recover your cumulative GPA, then you will need to work with your academic advisor to develop an academic progression plan by completing a Form 11, which can be found at https://www.fau.edu/graduate/documents/form-11-academic-progression-plan.pdf. Note that the cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is a FAU Graduate College minimum requirement, and individual programs may have higher standards for the cumulative GPA.
Why are letter grades lower than a 'C' not acceptable in graduate-level courses?
Letter grades less than a 'C' contribute less than two points toward a student's cumulative (overall) grade point average (GPA). Given that FAU undergraduate degree requirements require at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and the graduate degree requirements require at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, courses for which a student receives lower than a 'C' letter grade are below the average acceptable standards for good standing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
If a C is an acceptable grade, then why can I not graduate with a cumulative (overall) grade point average (GPA) lower than a 3.0?
The cumulative (overall) GPA is the average performance within the courses taken while enrolled within your degree program. A low 'C' letter grade (which contributes two points per credit to the cumulative GPA) can be offset by an 'A' (which contributes four points per credit to the cumulative GPA) within a course with the same number of credit hours, ultimately averaging out to a 3.0.
How do I delay graduation by a semester?
If you have completed all your degree program requirements, then no, you cannot delay graduation as you are required to apply for graduation. A delay in graduation typically occurs when there is an unexpected failure of a course in your last semester or if you are short on credits because of a miscalculation regarding the number of remaining credits to complete your degree program.
I would like to graduate in ______ with a minor in ______. Is it possible without paying for extra coursework?
Yes, assuming that this coursework also satisfies the requirements of the remaining electives within your MS degree program. Students are also encouraged to consider earning a graduate certificate along the way with their MS degree. However, it is important to note that if you pursue both a minor and a certificate, the courses will not triple count. Such courses can only double count (e.g., toward degree and minor), and so you will likely need to take extra courses toward a certificate program.
Attendance and Time Away
Is it acceptable that I arrive after the start of the semester?
No, students must arrive on time during the start of the semester. Course work may be assigned even on the first day of classes, and missing the required material may set you back in a way that may not be recoverable.
I need to visit my country in the middle of the semester. Who should I speak to about this? Am I permitted to leave? I promise to work hard and keep up with my studies.
It is not recommended to depart the country in the middle of the semester. If you need to leave, then you should ensure that your course instructors approve the mode at which you would be submitting assignments, taking exams, and attending classes while away. It is also advised that you consult with FAU International Student Services (ISS) regarding any issues that this departure may cause. Regardless, it is your responsibility to attend lectures and progress with assignment and exam deadlines within your courses in accordance with the syllabi provided by your course instructors as well as the mode of instruction that you enrolled in.
Career Outcomes
What can I do with my ______ MS degree? Are many graduates landing ______ engineering jobs?
