Dr. Veenstra has an accomplished record of excellent teaching, graduate student mentorship, research and service. In his previous appointment at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale he served as an Acting Associate Dean for SIU Carbondale's College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. He has served in a wide array of roles at all levels of that institution and he is heavily engaged in professional service having performed manuscript reviewing for over two dozen journals.
Dr. Veenstra has a very productive research profile which was shaped in its approach during his doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At SIU Dr. Veenstra emulated many of the successful research cultivation strategies that Madison is well-known for. In particular he has been successful in fostering the creation of a research group, populated primarily by graduate students, who not only gain valuable research opportunities and publications to kindle their own careers, but receive excellent mentoring and professional development throughout the process -- a point punctuated by Aaron receiving SIU’s 2018 Graduate Faculty Mentor Excellence Award.
Dr. Veenstra primarily engages in quantitative measurements of the way that social and political identity influence the outcome and effect of various media and political campaigns. From studies on fracking to the anti-vaxx movement to electoral politics his work tracks in clear and granular detail the social identity differences that make a difference in the success or failure of various initiatives that define our public and political culture.
