How do I make an appointment to see my Academic Advisor?

I’m failing a course. Should I withdraw from it?

The College of Engineering and Computer Science only allows students to attempt a course twice, and a withdrawal is considered an attempt. This is one option. Another option is to accept the failed grade. However, you need to consider the consequences of withdrawing from a course and also, failing a course. Some examples of consequences would be the Excess Hours Surcharge, Repeat Course Surcharge in later attempts, and not graduating on time.

I’m failing a MATH course. Should I withdraw from it?

The College of Engineering and Computer Science only allows students to attempt a course twice, and a withdrawal is considered an attempt. When it comes to math courses, students are required to attend the attend Math Boot Camp (MBC) after the first unsuccessful attempt. You will need to pass the MBC in order to be allowed to register for the math course a second time. Please see MBC information here

I failed a class. How does the Forgiveness Policy work?

I am aware that each course in the College of Engineering & Computer Science allows a maximum of two attempts (including withdrawals) to pass. What happens if I do not pass a course on the second attempt?

Can I add a minor?

Yes, you may be able to a minor to your engineering major. However, it is important to consider whether you can complete the minor within the timeframe you are required to graduate and to also not incur any Excess Hours. You will need to meet with your academic advisor so that together you can evaluate whether a minor is a possibly for you.

Does the College of Engineering and Computer Science offer any minors?

Yes! The College offers two minors:

Computer Science

Note: Computer Engineering majors can not get a minor in Computer Science. The Computer Science minor fits very well within the Electrical Engineering curriculum.

Can I be a double major?

Yes, you may be able to be a double major. However, it is important to consider whether you can complete the requirements of both majors within the timeframe you are required to graduate and to not incur any Excess Hours Surcharge. Often it is best to complete the first bachelor degree and then continue onto pursue a Master’s degree to avoid these limitations. Please met with your advisor to discuss this and evaluate what your options are.

How can I change my major?

Can I take a course at another school?

The answer is maybe. The University does not support taking courses at another institution. This is for the simple fact that you are an FAU student. All your coursework should be taken at FAU. Also, the graduation requirements need to be met. However, there are exceptions to this rule. You can contact your Academic Advisor to discuss the possibility of becoming a transient student Students may take courses elsewhere if certain conditions are met. To take courses elsewhere, students must obtain advisor approval in advance and follow the transient process.

Students must complete PART 1 and PART 2 of the Transient Process.

Will I get financial aid if I am approved to take a course at another school?

You will need to ask your Financial Aid Advisor about this. If your Financial Aid Advisor tells you the course will be covered, then you will need to fill out the online Transient Form . This will also require the approval of your Academic Advisor.

I am a Veteran and have served in the military. Will I receive transfer credits for this?

I have a lot work experience in the engineering field. Will I receive transfer credits for this?

Are there any engineering scholarships?

The College of Engineering & Computer Science has some scholarships which are listed on our webpage. However, we also encourage you to view the Financial Aid webpage and also review other sources of scholarships outside of FAU.

Where can I get tutoring help?

Depending on the course you need help with, FAU has a variety of tutoring services. For example if you need help with some lower division math courses, you can go to the Math Learning Center. Also the University offers supplemental instruction for many courses. The schedule is different every semester. You can view the schedule here.

Where can I get tutoring help for my engineering courses?

I’m trying to register for classes and the system is telling me that I need to take pre-requisite courses that I’ve already taken or received credit for.

You can copy the error message and paste it in an email to your primary Advisor. Include your full name, Z number, and a short explanation of what is happening. Your Advisor will look at the error message and respond to your email. If you meet pre-requisites, permission will be given to you to register for the courses.

Note: Time Conflicts messages are valid. You cannot miss any time in class. The Academic Advisor will not grant time conflict overrides. However, if you speak to the professor, and he or she allows you to arrive late or leave class early, then the Advisor must be informed in writing from the professor, and a Time Conflict override will be given.

I want to get into a class that is full/closed. Can my Advisor give me an override to get into the class?

No. The Academic Advisor will not give you an override to get into a course that is full or closed. You can sign up on the Waitlist (if available). You can ask your Advisor if there are any other options. Students are notified of Advance Registration weeks in advance. To avoid closed classes, a student must register early every semester.

How do I satisfy the FOREIGN LANGUAGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT (FLENT) on my DARs?

You can satisfy FLENT in one of three ways:

Foreign Language Course Work - 2 consecutive years in high school in the same language

Foreign Language Course Work – through the 2nd semester of a language in college

Student whose secondary or post-secondary curriculum was taught in a foreign language fills in the top section of this application, obtains the signature of an advisor in his/her college, encloses official school records and English translation, and submits it to the Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Comparative Literature (LLCL) for evaluation. LLCL is located in the Culture and Society Building (CU 97) - room 232 and operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 5:00.
