Themes & Threads: New Plays + Real Life
Themes & Threads: New Plays + Real Life: An Adult Education and Enrichment Initiative
Theatre Lab, the professional resident company of Florida Atlantic University, is announcing an expansion of their educational programming. For the last decade, their highly successful, robust education outreach programming has focused on local students in grades 4-12 with Future PAGES Project and LabRATS. The new series, “Themes & Threads: New Plays + Real Life”, seeks to engage theatre-goers, area professionals, and anyone interested in a deeper exploration into the new work being presented onstage. Helmed by Director of Education & Outreach, Jill Carr, the series will offer lectures, workshops, discussions, and activities adjacent to the themes & topics explored in the MainStage productions.
“Learning happens best when it's disguised as play, and it can and should be joyful! When Matt and I taught at the high school level, we saw students grow the most when they found moments of enjoyment in the subject,” said Jill Carr, director of education and community outreach at Theatre Lab. “I’m passionate about education and believe that you’re never too old to learn. Being able to provide the South Florida theatre community with these new workshops and events is so important, and we are thrilled to begin this new programming.” Designed to engage audiences beyond the stage, Themes and Threads invites the South Florida community to build deeper connections and shared discovery between new work, artists, and audiences.
“Our upcoming show offered the perfect opportunity to launch this series, since Joanna’s extensive travels through Spain might just be something any of us would want to know how to do,” said Matt Stabile, Theatre Lab’s Producing Artistic Director. The first Themes & Threads event will be hosted by playwright Joanna Castle Miller and focuses on her journey through Spain as she explored Jewish history during the process of writing CONVRSA. It will be held on January 22 at 7:00pm, and following events will take place during Theatre Lab’s Owl New Play Festival in April 2026.
Join us for a fascinating evening exploring Jewish history in Spain! Joanna Castle Miller, playwright/performer of both our Spring productions, shares discoveries from her own journeys in Spain, and provides guidance on how to plan your own adventure!
