OUR BFA PROGRAMS

B.F.A. IN THEATRE PERFORMANCE

Students are expected to make continued progress in their development as actors and artists. Retention is earned by the faculty’s evaluation of the student’s work, commitment, progress and personal growth.

BFA students can audition their freshmen year, and are eligible for all of the school year productions and both Summer Rep productions.

The BFA in Theatre Performance majors audition for all departmental productions, and accept roles as cast. They frequently perform alongside MFA acting candidates.

B.F.A. IN MUSICAL THEATRE

FAU's BFA in Musical Theatre degree is a highly selective, brand new degree program. Located in a thriving professional community with over 25 theatre companies; FAU students have the opportunity to transition from student to professional seamlessly. With a fresh industry forward vision, along with an exciting new musical theatre faculty, FAU is slated to be among the top BFA musical theatre programs in the southeast. Students accepted into this program will be immersed in an acting focused approach in voice, dance, and performance. Vigorous training prepares the student for a professional career in theatre.

B.F.A. in DESIGN/TECHNOLOGY

The B.F.A. in Theatre with an Emphasis in Design and Technology is well-suited for those who may want to pursue a career in design, stage technology, or stage management. The curriculum is also designed to prepare students who wish to pursue an advanced degree (M.F.A.) in Theatre Design and Technology, for the purpose of entering the fields of Higher Education or Professional Theatre.

The B.F.A. in Theatre with an emphasis in Design/Tech. embraces 6 areas of production: technical direction, stage management, scenic, costume and lighting design and technology. Students majoring in this area have ample opportunities to stage manage, assist in design and are routinely assigned such roles as: master electrician, props master, dresser, scenic artist, stitcher, etc. B.F.A. students work alongside graduate students and a faculty of working professionals.

To help the student achieve these goals, the Department of Theatre and Dance offers a rich array of courses and a 7-production season comprised of 4 mainstage theatre shows, 1 second-stage theatre production, and 2 mainstage dance productions. Additionally, the Department produces two to three shows during its celebrated Summer Repertory Festival .

AUDITIONS AND INTERVIEWS 2025

Audition Requirements

*For all programs please note that for Summer or Fall 2025 admission, the University deadline for admitted students to contract for on-campus housing is March 17 at 5pm. *

*The application deadline for Summer or Fall 2025, for first-year applicants, is March 14*

 

BFA in Musical Theatre  - Requires a prescreen through  FAU Acceptd Site. The criteria for the prescreen is available at the Musical Theatre Common Prescreen site  MTCP  .  We will accept prescreen submissions beginning September 1, 2024.

  • January 15, 2025 - The deadline for accepting prescreens. In person auditions are highly recommended as you and your family can participate in an orientation, tour the department and University, see our shows, meet with students and faculty, visit local attractions, and get a real feel for the FAU experience. 
  • Saturday Feb 8, 2025 - Local auditions on the FAU campus . 
  • Friday Feb 7-9, 2025 - Attend our production of the musical 1776 in our University Theatre.
  • Monday Feb 10, 2025 - Visiting students are invited to observe our Musical Theatre Vocal Craft class. 
  • Monday Feb 10, 2025 - Virtual auditions will be scheduled beginning at 5pm. 
  • Saturday Feb 22, 2025 - Notification of acceptances and alternates will go out.
  • Monday March 17, 2025 - Deadline for Housing and FAU applications.

In addition, FAU representatives attend most musical theatre auditions at events such as the Florida Theatre Conference (FTC), Moonifieds, CAP, Unifieds, Florida Combined, Thespians, and other potential recruiting events.

On Campus Audition Requirements:

  • Students should prepare two contrasting songs and a contemporary monologue, no more than one minute each. This may include the same material used in the Pre-screen. Please be prepared with an additional contrasting song and monologue. An accompanist will be provided.
  • Bring dance/movement clothing. There is a dance/movement call. BFA Musical Theatre students will be in a variety of dance classes every semester and placed in a dance level that will challenge and strengthen their ability. 
     

BFA in Acting  - Requires a prescreen through Acceptd at the  FAU Acceptd Site  We will accept prescreen submissions beginning September 1, 2024.

  • FAU will notify you of a callback invitation no later than January 20, 2025.
  • On Campus Auditions February 8 and February 9, 2025.
  • Friday Feb 7-9, 2025 - Attend our production of the musical 1776 in our University Theatre.
  • Rolling admissions after February 8, 2025.
  • Virtual Zoom Auditions February 10, 2025 and on an invitation basis until May.

Acceptance Dates:

Acceptance to the Theatre Performance BFA Track is typically offered by late February.

In addition, FAU representatives attend the Florida Theatre Conference (FTC).

On Campus Audition Requirements:

  • Students should prepare two contrasting monologues no more than one minute each. This may include the same material used in the Pre-screen.
  • Please be prepared with an additional contrasting monologue.

BFA in Design & Technology  - Requires a prescreen through Acceptd at the  FAU Acceptd Site  We will accept prescreen submissions beginning September 1, 2024. Interviews are on the FAU campus Saturday February 8, 2025. Although we recommend interviewing on our beautiful campus so you can get a real feel for FAU, representatives also conduct interviews at the Florida Theatre Conference (FTC) and other potential recruiting events. For the FTC interview, requirements are listed on the FTC website. To attend this conference, high school students should register through their school drama teacher.  College transfer students would need to register themselves at flatheatre.org.

Interview Requirements:

  • Students should upload their portfolio and/or resume and be prepared to discuss their interests, design process, and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many shows does FAU do?

Our department and area offer a wide variety of performance opportunities:

  • Four mainstage productions and one black box production.
  • Two professional summer repertory productions. 
  • Theatre Lab, FAU’s Professional Equity resident theatre company, allows students to work
    with award winning playwrights and award winning Equity actors.
  • South Florida is also home to a huge vibrant professional theatre community.

What kind of shows do you do?

Really old to really new and everything in between. We vary our repertoire from the classics such as
Shakespeare, to contemporary such as Deborah Zoe Laufer. Theatre Lab’s mission is to foster brand
new plays such as American Son and Everything is Super Great, both of which went on to Broadway and
Off-Broadway.

Do you have scholarships?

Yes! Once you have joined us, FAU’s Department of Theatre and Dance offers several merit-based
scholarships for the academic year ranging from $500-$5,000 for commitment to your studies,
department, and a minimum 3.0GPA. Need based scholarships are available  https://fau.edu/finaid

Can I have a job and be in the BFA?

You can expect your training in the BFA to be rigorous. We expect you to practice professionalism
in your positive attitude towards your training and your peers. Although we do have students who
manage part-time jobs outside of school, your work schedule must come second to your training
and rehearsals.

Do you offer private voice lessons?

Yes. This is part of the curriculum for the BFA Musical Theatre degree.

How much dance do I get?

Lots! This is part of the curriculum for the BFA Musical Theatre degree.

Do you offer film classes?

Yes! Our Acting 6 and 7 classes are Acting for the Camera 1 and 2. These are required for our BFA Acting majors and optional for our Musical Theatre majors.

As a freshman, can I be in shows my first year?

Yes! You are required to audition your first week of classes for our fall shows as part of your
training (incoming freshman can do their FTC pieces). Depending of the size cast needed for those
shows we have had many freshman get cast their first semester!
