Directors Note
First and foremost, thank you for joining us for Festival Rep 2023 and choosing to support the essential art of live theatre! We are thrilled to share our production of A Chorus Line with you today!

This show is one of the classics of American Musical Theatre and comes steeped in tradition and history. As most of you know, the original production opened nearly half a century ago, ran for fifteen years before closing as, what was then, the “longest running show on Broadway”, and was then followed by a revival that ran for another two years. An audience-favorite which is equally revered by veteran and aspiring musical theatre artists, the show requires an entire cast of true “triple threat” performers able to act, sing and DANCE, throughout the entire evening. These reasons make it a wonderful choice to help the students stretch their skills and grow their craft and for the Department to further develop the components necessary for what is becoming a dynamic Musical Theatre program.

I was honored to be invited to direct this production and, to be completely honest, as someone who has worked exclusively in new works for most of my professional career, I was also very surprised. The immediate thought that came to mind was “What are we going to bring to this classic to make it our own?”

The characters in this show endure a grueling audition where they are asked to blur the lines of their professional and personal lives – all for the possibility of temporary employment. It is unfair and, unfortunately, practices like these have been an accepted reality in our industry for far too long. For me, A Chorus Line provided an invaluable opportunity to offer students some insight  into the past and current realities of the professional world they will soon enter. We spent A LOT of time in rehearsals discussing things like: Power Dynamics, Appropriate Pay Scales, Work/Life Balance, and exploring ways to disentangle Career from Personal Identity.

In the past few years, our industry has seen huge shifts and clear calls for change. It is up to us as theatre-educators and theatre-makers to heed those calls and ensure that the work is created in a safe, healthy, and sustainable way. In this way, we will ensure that future generations “won’t forget, can’t regret,” what they do for love. Enjoy the show!

- Matt Stabile

Directors Note
First and foremost, this play is not a musical—And perhaps this is the first of many red-herrings in this farcical and ingenious comic romp, masquerading as a “Whodunit”. It is through this lens that we examine a bygone era of glitz and glamour; when technicolor was in its infancy. The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 was written by John Bishop for the Circle Repertory Company and moved to Broadway’s Longacre Theatre on April 6, 1987, where it enjoyed a successful three-month run. The play offers corny satire of classic Hollywood thrillers while simultaneously poking fun at show business via the “Great White Way”.
Audiences and critics (at least for three months) loved this play and here’s what they said: “It’s a kind of crossbreeding of Charles Ludlam’s The Mystery of Irma Vep and Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play seasoned with a soupçon of “Noises Off” -New York Times. “Enormous fun…Its strength comes in part from the sheer diamond wit and diamanté showbiz glitter of Bishop’s writing. Even his corn is succulently served”- NY Post. “Murders is the intelligent person’s kind of nonsense” - New York Magazine.
More than 80 years have passed since America’s involvement in WWII and subsequently becoming the first superpower. It is a world that exists only in memory. Broadway, radio, and the movies provided shelter from the devastation that was the Great Depression at a time when we as a nation desperately needed a place to escape, a place to laugh, and a place to heal. Today, our nation is still coming out of the disorientation of Covid-19 coupled with an ever-changing cultural landscape that is fueled by fear, suspicion, and intolerance. We as a people desperately need a place to heal and to laugh. I believe that through laughter we shall build a better community of acceptance.
Make no mistake, this is blatant escapism—so let us escape freely into the past to build a better community in the present through laughter. I encourage you all to join me in embracing this soupçon of silly and let us escape into this farcical pseudo whodunit that is The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.
