Tips for auditions
Please read the audition instructions carefully and adhere to the length and content requested.
Prepare material that is appropriate for the productions and characters you are auditioning for. This can mean material from the same playwrights or composers, or material from the same time period or theatrical style.
When looking at characters in our productions, keep in mind that these shows will be cast entirelly from our student body, so there may be more flexibility in terms of the age range of the characters you could be right for.
Prepare, prepare, prepare. The better prepared you are before your audition, the more you will be in control of your performance and the more confident you will feel in the room.
Give yourself a window of time before and after your scheduled audition. South Florida traffic can be very umpredictable, so you want to aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before your allotted time. If you are already on campus, you want to give yourself time to get in the zone and focus on the audition ahead, sometimes we might request you fill in an additional form or paperwork prior to going in the room, or we might be running ahead of time. So even if you are not driving to the audition, you should aim to get there at least a half hour prior to your time.
Make sure to print the right amount of copies of your resume ahead of time. Technology can be unpredictable too. Don’t wait until the last minute to print your resumes. Having a couple of extra copies is always a smart choice!
Be supportive of your peers! They are not your competition, they are your collaborators and your support system during your time at our department. Celebrate your successes, and help each other out!
Enjoy yourself! You’ve done your preparation: rehearsed your audition material, printed your resume and sheet music as instructed, and arrived with time to spare and mentally prepare. Think of this audition as a mini-performance opportunity. Don’t feel like you have anything to prove. Show us your work and stay true to your character, we are here to support you!
