Recyclabot

RecyclaBot

Overview

Our project, named Recyclabot, is an autonomous robot that operates in parks and other grassy areas to pick up plastic bottles. Recyclabot will use a combination of cameras and ultrasonic sensors to detect objects in front of it. The robot will utilize a differential-drive system powered by two independent, geared DC motors. The 10-inch front wheels provide enough ground clearance for common obstacles found in a park setting while also providing enough traction on slick grass. Two ultrasonic sensors at the front are used for collision detection while the robot is operating, and the camera will be used for object recognition. A GPS receiver and magnetic compass sensor will be used to maneuver the robot around the park as commanded, following information that the computer has received from the camera mounted on the top of the robot. The trash collection system will function with a conveyor belt that can lower down to a potential trash item and then simultaneously scoop and drive the litter up a ramp and into the collection bin.

Community Benefit

Plastic waste has been a continuous cause of lasting damage to nature and wildlife. Animals can get trapped in littered objects or mistake the items for food. Additionally, the toxic materials and chemical residue from some trash can be blown into forests or washed into waterways such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. With Recylcabot, we can help to reduce the amount of pollution we see in parks and other communal areas.
