ALS-V (Autonomous Limnological Surface Vessel)

ALS-V (Autonomous Limnological Surface Vessel)

Overview

Blue green algae has been a major concern in Florida’s coastal waterways and inland estuaries for many years. The presence of blue green algae is harmful to both wildlife and human health. It has been established by researchers that the single most important step in controlling and preventing the spread of the algae is early detection.

To combat the current blue green algae problem, the ALS-V was designed with the intention of improving upon many of the current methods and eliminating some of the restrictions other collection methods have. The major design feature of the ALS-V is the ability to autonomously navigate a pre-set course based off coordinates and collect samples at specific locations along the course. At these locations, a pump turns on and collects a 100 mL sample of water and three sensors collect data and transmit the information back to the user. The goal in mind is that the researcher can examine the data at a location. If the data presents indicators for blue green algae, then once the vessel returns from the mission the water sample from that specific location can be examined further to confirm the presence of algae growth.

Community Benefit

The ALS-V has the potential to provide major assistance in the fight against blue green algae. With the ability to navigate large waterways and collect water sample data at various points, the ALS-V can greatly improve the ability to identify an algae bloom before it occurs. Early detection of the algae can have a major impact on stopping the spread and, in turn, saving countless species of wildlife from its devastating impacts. Along with this, early detection can help mitigate the effects that the algae has on the human respiratory system. Overall, the ALS-V can help clean up waterways, coastlines and create a safer aquatic environment.
