6th Annual Faculty & Staff Excellence Awards

Hosted by the College to celebrate faculty and staff achievements. Nominations will be accepted in six categories. See the details below to participate. Nominations must be submitted by Monday, Feb. 5 at 5:00 p.m.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science recognizes the excellence of our faculty and staff through awards for research, teaching, service, and dedication to the College’s mission and for improving students’ experiences. For the 2023-2024 academic year, there will be six categories of award: (1) Senior Faculty Research Award, (2) Junior Faculty Research Award, (3) Senior Faculty Teaching Award, (4) Junior Faculty Teaching Award, (5) Faculty Service and Outreach Award, and (6) Staff Recognition Award. 

Each award will consist of a $1,000 stipend and a certificate. Award recipients will be recognized at the annual faculty and staff recognition ceremony that will be held Monday, Feb. 19, 2024. An invitation with the details of the event will follow.

Nomination Procedure

Any faculty member, staff, and administrator can submit nominations. Self-nominations will also be accepted. Multiple nominations should be submitted separately. Nominations must be uploaded to the submission forms below by Feb. 5, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Incomplete nominations will not be accepted.

Nomination Materials

Each nomination should provide sufficient supporting material for the committee to evaluate the nominee. The evaluation is based on the quality and quantity of work conducted by the nominee over the past three (3) years. Specifically, a nomination package should include at least the following:

  1. A nomination statement, maximum two pages, highlighting the reason why the nominee should receive the award. The statement should explicitly address the relevant criteria, outlined below, for the specified award.
  2. A biographical sketch, maximum three (3) pages, including a record related to the award for which the nominee is nominated.
  3. Any other supporting documents as the nominee sees fit.

Composition of the Awards Committee

The awards committee will consist of members of relevant College Committees. The descriptions below are intended to serve as guidelines for nominators to understand the perspective of the selection committee when it reviews nominations in each category.


AWARD CATEGORIES


 

Senior Faculty Research Award

This award seeks to celebrate faculty members for outstanding achievements in research and creative activities, longstanding impact and leadership in their fields of expertise, and substantial contributions both within and outside the University. 

Nominee eligibility: 

Any tenured faculty member with a primary appointment in the College who has not previously won this award for the past three (3) years.

Nominee criteria:

  1. Exemplifies excellence in scholarship and research through:
    • Extraordinary contributions and dedication to research.
    • Innovative approaches in research, scholarship or creative activities.
    • Support of diverse students in research.
  2. Has a record of research contributions with broad impact on the field and society.
  3. Is recognized externally as a scholar, as demonstrated through publications, awards, memberships in professional organizations, and invited lectures and papers.

Junior Faculty Research Award

This award seeks to recognize exceptional performance and distinction in early-career faculty research and creative activities, as demonstrated through contributions to the relevant fields through original work and through building a foundation for lifetime leadership in integrating research and education. 

Nominee eligibility: 

Any tenure track faculty member in an Assistant Professor rank with a primary appointment in the College and who has not previously won the award for the past three (3) years.

Nominee criteria:

  1. Exemplifies excellence in scholarship and research through:
    • Exemplary contribution and dedication.
    • New and innovative research programs.
  2. Shows that research results contribute to the expansion of knowledge.
  3. Shows evidence of making an impact in their fields of expertise.

Faculty Teaching Awards: Senior and Junior Levels

This award seeks to recognize major accomplishment and outstanding qualities and strength in teaching, including outstanding classroom instruction, innovative teaching methods, and excellence in educational leadership. 

Nominee eligibility: 

For an award at the senior level: Any tenured faculty member, senior instructor and university instructor with a primary appointment in the College and who has not previously won this award for the past three (3) years.

For an award at the junior level: Any tenure track faculty member in an Assistant Professor rank, full-time lecturer and instructor with a primary appointment in the College and who has not previously won this award for the past three (3) years.

Nominee criteria:

  1. Demonstrates outstanding contributions to education through:
    • Innovative course design/redesign and engagement in curriculum development.
    • Connecting the educational experience with real-world applications.
    • Enhancing participation of under-represented groups.
    • High-level commitment to students both in and outside classroom.
  2. Demonstrates excellence in educational leadership through actively participating in learning, teaching or curriculum related committees, involving with relevant organizations and associations.

Faculty Service and Outreach Award

This award seeks to honor faculty members for their outstanding and dedicated services to the Department, College and FAU, and whose activities as a faculty member have significantly enhanced the quality of our educational programs and the external community. 

Nominee eligibility: 

Any faculty member who has held full-time and continuous appointment with a primary appointment in the College and who has not previously won this award for the past three (3) years.

Nominee criteria:

  1. Provides exemplary service to the Department, College and University through activities such as committee service.
  2. Plays significant roles in governance bodies and related activities.
  3. Demonstrates excellence in administrative, academic and curriculum support work.
  4. Contributes to the University’s programs to enhance equal opportunity and cultural diversity.
  5. Service to the external community through outreach which utilizes the faculty member’s professional expertise; participation in community affairs as a College or University representative; offering public talks on education and research, impacting public or institutional policies; and service to professional, public and private non-for-profit organizations.

Staff Recognition Award

This award seeks to recognize staff for serving with distinction and making exceptional contributions to the College’s mission, going above and beyond their assigned duties, often crossing traditional, positional or departmental boundaries. 

Nominee eligibility: 

Currently employed full-time staff members, including academic support, advisors, and technical services staff, who has not previously won this award for the past three (3) years.

Nominee criteria:

  1. Has had significant impact on his/her Department or College through:
    • Excellence in academic and service support
    • Resourcefulness
    • Innovation and creativity
    • Problem solving
    • Promoting a positive and collaborative working environment and morale.
  2. Consistently exceeds expectations on the job: for example, significantly improving a work process or system to improve its efficiency and users’ satisfaction.
