John McCoy, Professor of Art in Ceramics, is a functional potter influenced by natural and organic objects and the varied and rich traditions of ceramics. He often throws classical forms that are then combined or altered. Professor McCoy received his B.A. from San Diego State University and M.F.A. from the University of Montana. His current work involves the use of high fire clays and firing methods: porcelain, stoneware clays, cone ten reduction, and anagama firing. To John, the surfaces (glazes) are extremely important and are thoroughly investigated before throwing a body of work. He strives for a certain fluidity and warmth that will show through in the work and will relate to the viewer, or to its handmade origins.
