Your Student Success Course

This fall, all first-year students will be enrolled in a success course connected to your Virtual Community.  In each of these courses, you will meet other students who share similar interests, get to know an FAU instructor invested in your success, and practice skills that will help you reach your goals.

Although you may have taken a “college success” course in high school, our SLS courses introduce you to new topics, people, and opportunities here at FAU.

If you are affiliated with one of the programs below, click on the corresponding link to learn more about your success course.  All other students will be enrolled in SLS 1410: FAU iSucceed.

On behalf of your SLS instructors, welcome to FAU!  We look forward to meeting you on the first day of class.

FAU iSucceed (SLS 1410)

FAU iSucceed is our signature online success course that will be taken by more than 3,000 students this year.  The course fits easily into your class schedule because you decide when you will log into class.  In about two hours each week, you will learn about yourself, about FAU, and about what it takes to be successful in college.  iSucceed can be taken as a stand-alone course for zero-credit (transcript notation only) or combined with SLS 1931 as part of a First-Year Interest Group for one academic credit.  The course is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.  In Fall 2020, students will be assigned to iSucceed sections of 50 students majoring in the same college.  If you took iSucceed in the Summer semester, you do not need to enroll in the Fall.

First-Year Interest Groups (SLS 1931 + SLS 1410)

Students who have joined a First-Year Interest Group (FIG) enroll in a section of SLS 1931 taught by faculty and advisors in your college.  You also take SLS 1410 FAU iSucceed in either the Summer or Fall semester.  Upon successful completion of both courses, you earn one academic credit.  SLS 1931 meets once per week during the first eight weeks of the Fall semester.  FAU iSucceed is a fully on-line course completed over six weeks in the Summer semester or eight weeks in the Fall.  You will also be matched with an upper-division student who works with you as both your teaching assistant and offers out-of-class support as your Peer Academic Coach.

University Honors Program (SLS 1501)

If you are part of the University Honors Program (UHP), your schedule will include Honors SLS 1501: Introduction to Academic Life.  This two-credit course meets for the full semester.  All UHP SLS sections share a common reading, Artificial Unintelligence by Meredith Broussard.   You will meet with your instructor twice each week and then gather with all UHP first-year students for the Common Hour every Monday.  Upper-division students volunteer as Peer Academic Coaches to mentor the newest members of the UHP community.

Wilkes Honors College Forum (IDH 1022)

All members of the Wilkes community are invited to attend the weekly College Forum. First-Year WHC students earn one-academic credit for their participation throughout the full semester. The forum is an introduction to academic life and the research of the WHC faculty.

Student-Athletes (SLS 1412)

As a new varsity athlete, you will take SLS 1412 with instructors from the Student Athlete Center for Academic Excellence.  This zero-credit course meets weekly on Monday evenings throughout the semester.  Your course will incorporate the national NCAA Life Skills curriculum that emphasizes academic achievement, athletic success, and personal well-being.

Career Exploration for Undeclared Students (SLS 1301)

If you have yet to declare a major at FAU, you will be enrolled in SLS 1301: Career and Life Planning, a one-credit course taught in the first eight-weeks of the semester and which meets twice each week.  Taught by nationally certified career counselors from FAU’s Career Center, this course focuses on self-assessment, choosing a major, exploring career paths. and developing an action plan to help achieve your career goals.
