Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are Virtual Communities?

College is about the friends you make, the new ideas you encounter, the student organizations you join and lead, the campus traditions you bring to life, and so much more. In your Virtual Community, you’ll have an online space to meet fellow Owls and become part of the University community. You’ll be invited to meet student organizations, to participate in a wide range of events and activities, and to get to know one another. In other words, we are bringing the campus to you until we can be here together!

  2. How do I find my Virtual Community?

Each Virtual Community will have their own virtual home base (called a team) on Microsoft Teams. Prior to the semester, you will receive an email giving you access to your team. That team space is where your Virtual Community will meet one another, get to know FAU, and the Jupiter and Boca Raton areas. We recommend that you download the Microsoft Teams app on your device(s) so you can connect easily.

  3. Activities and Events

Your community leaders will invite you to join events and activities each week. They are optional but highly encouraged. This is your chance to meet other students, get familiar with all FAU has to offer, and learn about the Boca and Jupiter communities.

    1. Where can I find the list of activities for my Virtual Community?

You can find the activities listed on the Student Activity schedule, on this website, or on our Instagram @fauvirtualcommunities. Your OL/OCL and Virtual Community Leader will also remind you of upcoming events in your team chat.

    2. If I have specific questions about an activity, who should I contact?

You can reach out to the Student Leader or the Virtual Community Leader. Their contact information can be found under the “Files” tab in Microsoft Teams.

  4. How long will Virtual Communities last?

This is an 8-week program, filled with exciting activities!

  5. How long is each activity generally?

All events last about one hour. There are other shorter activities that you can do on your own time. Your Community schedule will have specific details for each event or activity.

  6. What do I need to participate?

To participate, you'll need a phone or computer and an internet connection. Several events, including the weekly frame challenge, will be hosted on Instagram. In addition to Microsoft Teams, some of the events will be hosted utilizing other platforms such as WebEx. Don’t forget to bring your energy!

  7. I have accessibility needs to participate in iSucceed/SLS or the Virtual Communities. What should I do?

For accommodations to participate in the Virtual Communities, please contact your Virtual Community Leader.

  8. I read that every student will take an SLS course. I took a college success course in high school, so doesn’t that count?

For accommodations to participate in the Virtual Communities, please contact your Virtual Community Leader.

  9. What is the difference between my Student Leader, Virtual Community Leader, and Section Leader?

We use a lot of titles and acronyms here! We sometimes forget that they don't make sense when you are new, so thanks for asking!

    • Your student leader will either be an Orientation Leader (OL) or Owls Care Leader (OCL). They help connect you to other students and can share a student perspective on how to make the most of FAU.
    • Your Virtual Community Leader is a professional staff member from Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. They partner with your OL/OCL to host events for your Virtual Community
    • For those of you enrolled in FAU iSucceed, your Section Leader is the person reading and responding to your work in class.
