Need Based Employment Programs

FEDERAL WORK-STUDY BASICS

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a need-based federally funded part-time employment program, which allows eligible students to earn money to help pay for education expenses. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to be considered for federal financial aid, including FWS.

  • Returning Work Study Students:Students who have been awarded any of the need-based employment programs may either return to an existing position or access Handshake database and follow the instructions to find a position. Students are awarded on a "first come" basis. NOTE:  Students interested in Fall 2021 Work Study can apply for Fall Work Study jobs as of July 17, 2021.  Once returning students have been awarded:

    STEP 1: Access Financial Aid section of FAU Self-Service via MYFAU

    Method 1:

    1. Sign into MYFAU with your FAU credentials
    2. Click/tap the "Money Matters!" tile
    3. Click/tap the "Your Financial Aid" tile to go directly to Financial Aid within FAU Self-Service

    Method 2:

    1. Sign into MYFAU with your FAU credentials
    2. Click/tap the "FAU Self-Service" tile to access FAU Self-Service
    3. Click/tap the "Financial Aid" tab to access Financial Aid within Self-Service

    STEP 2: Accepting Offers within FAU Self-Service

    1. Click/tap the "Financial Aid Status" tile
    2. If prompted, select "Academic Year" from the drop-down list
    3. Click/tap on the "Student Requirements" tile
    4. Click/tap the "here" button as shown below

    5. Click/tap on the "Terms & Conditions" tab and accept terms
    6. Click/tap on the "Accept Award Offer" tab to accept/decline Work Study
  • Students who have never been awarded Federal Work Study should create an account in Handshake and start applying for Work Study jobs .

FWS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Completed FAFSA on file.
    • If you have NOT been awarded Federal Work Study, but wish to be considered, you MUST meet the following eligibility criteria (steps 2-7 below):
  2. Have already received an award offer that did not include Federal Work Study.
  3. Have unmet need. Get information on the calculation of need.
  4. Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Requirements.
  5. Be enrolled at FAU.
  6. Create an account in Handshake and start applying for Work Study jobs.

FLORIDA WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM (FWEP)

The Florida Work Experience Program is a State of Florida funded need based program providing eligible Florida students the opportunity to secure work experiences complementary to and which reinforce the student's educational and career goals.

Recipients of the Florida Work Experience Program may work on campus in positions that complement and reinforce academic and career goals. All recipients of the FWEP program MUST be Florida Residents and must be undergraduate students.

REQUIREMENTS for FWEP:

In order to be considered for the Florida Work Experience Program (FWEP), you must also meet eligibility requirements, numbers 1 through 6, listed above.  All applications are processed based on the availability of funding.

The hiring department completes the Need Based Placement Forms. The student must return these forms to the Office of Student Financial Aid, to be awarded.
