Biomimetic Unmanned Underwater Vehicle

Overview

Underwater vehicles are critical technology for multiple applications, such as military, commercial use, or scientific research. Specifically, biomimetic technology is very useful for quiet, non-intrusive research or missions. With this project, we were able to design and fabricate a vehicle with biomimetic propulsion and vision processing navigation. The objectives for this project were to achieve a surge speed of half a body length per second, to pitch plus/minus 90 degrees, and to complete an obstacle course for the RoboSub competition. 

Community Benefit

With this project, we were able to design an example of biomimetic propulsion which helps bring awareness to different forms of ocean wildlife and the valuable inspiration they can provide innovative technology.
