Spanish Minor

 

Declaring a Minor in Spanish (15-18 credits)

Students wishing to add a minor to their major course of study can do so by earning 15-18 credits in Spanish in one of two tracks: Spanish for non-heritage learners' track or Spanish for Heritage learners' track.

Spanish Minor for Non-Heritage Learners or Second Language Track 

Prerequisites:

Students need to take on-line Spanish Language Placement Exam before registration for language courses:

Students who CLEP/AP 4 credits start with SPN 1121 & students who CLEP/AP 8 credits start with SPN 2220 (Congratulations! SPN 2220 counts for the minor!)        

Minor Requirements: Five courses at the intermediate or advanced level, with at most two courses at the intermediate level (2000 level)

 


Spanish Minor for Heritage Learners Track

A heritage learner is any person studying Spanish who has a cultural connection to Spanish through family or country of origin and some ability communicating in Spanish or at least understanding the language. Heritage learners are first, second, or third generation and their abilities in Spanish fluctuate broadly: some are proficient in Spanish, others only have basic oral skills, and others only understand the language.

Students who CLEP/AP 4 credits start with SPN 1340 & students who CLEP/AP 8 credits start with SPN 2341 (Congratulations! SPN 2341 counts for the minor!)                

Minor Requirements: Five courses at the intermediate or advanced level, with at most two courses at the intermediate level (2000 level). When available and appropriate, students should take intermediate (SPN 2341) and advanced (SPN 3343) courses designed for heritage learners.

 

Note: Students that have completed courses successfully at the 3000 level may not enroll in a course at a lower level. At least 75% of all minor credits must be from FAU. All courses must be passed with a grade of ‘C’ or better. Courses taken on study abroad may be counted toward the minor if they are approved by the student’s advisor before the student begins the study abroad program.
