Healthy Sleep Less Stress
Too much stress can hurt your sleep and your health. Getting enough good sleep every night can help you feel less stressed. But when you’re stressed, good sleep might be hard to find, and sleep problems can make your day-to-day worries worse.
Here are some easy habits to help you sleep better and feel calmer!
-
Keep a regular sleep schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day (yes, even on weekends!). A consistent schedule helps your body know when it’s time to rest and when it’s time to wake up.
-
Stay within recommended caffeine limits (200 mg): Too much caffeine (in soda, energy drinks, coffee, or tea) can make it harder to fall asleep. Try to avoid caffeine late in the day so your body has a chance to wind down.
-
Have one hour of screen-free time before bed: Screens like phones, tablets or computers give off blue light that tells your brain “Stay awake!” Turn off screens at least one hour before bedtime. Use this time to relax instead.
-
Try creating a wind-down routine: Listen to calming music, read a book, do light stretching, or journal before bed.
-
Take a mindfulness walk: Take a mindful nature walk in between your finals to promote stress relief and be in the moment. You can also take a mindfulness walk as a study break!
-
Use a stress ball: Practice progressive muscle relaxation with a stress ball by squeezing it with your hand for 10 seconds and then relaxing your hand and letting go for 20 seconds.
- Practice deep breathing: Studying for finals? Try box breathing for a quick break. Breathe in, hold your breath, breathe out, hold your breath again...and repeat! Try deep breathing and other relaxation techniques by claiming your free account on Welltrack Boost.
Small habits can make a big difference. By taking a few minutes each day to rest, breathe, and reset, you can boost your sleep, ease stress, and feel more prepared for finals!

RideShare Tips
Planning to use a rideshare service is a great harm reduction technique! Consider using a rideshare or designated sober driver. If you choose to use a rideshare, utilize the SAMI Method: Stop and review safety features Ask - “What’s my name” - confirm the driver name is also the same as listed in the app Match the license plate and display Inform - share details of the ride with a friend or family member When utilizing rideshare services, be smart and stay safe. Report any safety issues and concerns, use your intuition, and use the buddy system. If you are interested in more harm reduction strategies, contact Owls Care Health Promotion at wellness@fau.edu or follow our instagram @fauowlscare
