Respect Is the Real Love Language!

Valentine’s Day is a great time to pause and reflect on what healthy relationships actually look like, romantic and platonic.

A key part of healthy relationships is consent. Consent applies to more than physical intimacy; it also includes emotional conversations, sharing personal information, time together, and affection. Using MOVES can help clarify what consent should look like:

Mutual – Everyone involved agrees and no one person is making all the decisions

Ongoing – Consent can change and should be checked in about. Consent can also be taken back at anytime

Voluntary – No pressure, guilt, or coercion

Expressed – A clear and genuine “yes” and body language reflects an enthusiatic "yes"

Safe – Everyone involved is able to consent

Consent can sound like asking, “Is this okay?”, “Do you have the space for this conversation right now?”, or “Let me know if you want to stop.”

Boundaries go hand in hand with consent. Boundaries help define what you are and are not comfortable with, and they can be physical, emotional, digital, or time related. Setting boundaries might look like saying, “I need some time to myself,” “I’m not comfortable talking about that,” or “Please check in before hugging me.” Respecting boundaries, your own and others’, helps relationships feel safer and more supportive.

This Valentine’s Day, healthy relationships start with communication, consent, and boundaries no matter the type of relationship.
