Video Contest Judging for the Seventh Annual Art of Science

Below you will find the video and the caption. Please complete the rubric to the right, and click submit for your score to be entered. Each question on the rubric is based on a score from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest score. We also encourage your comments on the videos, as this is used as a way to give feedback, and possible quotes for publication.

Flow Visualization

This video captures the movement of the knifebot, a bio-inspired underwater robotic system designed to swim using an undulating fin, similar to how fish glide gracefully through water. The experiment was conducted in the wave flume at the SeaTech Laboratory, where the knifebot was placed in a steady flow environment. Fluorescent dye was released into the water to visualize the complex flow patterns generated by the fin’s oscillations. A camera positioned beneath the tank recorded the fin’s motion and the resulting fluid dynamics, revealing the harmony between robotic engineering and natural aquatic propulsion.
