PROFESSOR YUKWENG M. AND YING YUH JUNE LIN ENDOWMENT FUND
Florida Atlantic University is proud to announce the Professor Yukweng M. and Ying Yuh June Lin Endowment Fund. The Lin Endowment Fund was established in honor of Professor Yukweng "Mike" Lin and his wife, Ying Yuh “June” Lin, for their lifetime contribution to engineering education and advancement. The fund provides opportunities for students and faculty to pursue their goals in education and professional development via the hosting of renowned international speakers in engineering.
Professor Lin received his undergraduate degree in 1946 in civil engineering from Xiamen University. He went to work in Taiwan and married Miss Ying Yuh June Wang in 1952. In the Fall of 1954, Professor Lin left for the United States to enroll at Stanford University. He finished his doctorate in structural engineering in two and a half years, setting the record for the shortest tenure for completing a doctorate at the Stanford University’s civil engineering graduate school. Professor Lin also became known as the primary authority on the subject as well as one of the founders of the area of Stochastic Structural Dynamics from the late 1950’s to early 1960’s. During his teaching career, he taught at the University of Xiamen (1946-1948), Ethiopia (57-58), University of Illinois (60-83) as professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and Civil Engineering, as a visiting professor at MIT (1967-1968), as a visiting professor at the University of New Mexico summer 1969, as a senior visiting instructor at the University of South Hampton (1976). His industrial employment included Vertol Aircraft Corporation (1956-57) and Boeing Company (1958-1960), and he served as a consultant for NASA, Air Force Material Laboratory, General Motors Company, General Dynamics Corporation, Boeing Company, and TRW Corporation. Professor Lin's numerous publications include his pioneering book Probabilistic Theory of Structural Dynamics (McGraw-Hill 1967 and Japanese translation 1969), and over 200 technical papers encompassing both civil and aeronautical engineering.
Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Lin was honored with highly distinguished awards, including the Ticinense Medal from the University of Pavia in Italy in 1983, the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Alfred Freudenthal medal in 1984, the Foscolo medal in appreciation for his help in developing and fostering Stochastic Structural Dynamics as an area of research at the university from the University of Pavia in 1988, Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize from Germany in 2000, and Jacob P DenHartog award from ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) in 2001. He was presented an honorary engineering doctorate in 1994 by the University of Waterloo in Canada . In 2000, he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineers in 2000 and in 2001, was elected as a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering.
At FAU, Professor Lin held the Charles E. Schmidt Eminent Scholar Chair in Engineering and founded the Center for Applied Stochastics Research
June was born in Fuzhou, China. She was a graduate of Fuchow Hua-Nan Girl’s Academy, and a biology teacher at Kaoshiung Girl’s High school and Chien-Kuo Secondary school. After they married, June chose to stay at home to take care of their family and raise their children. June was best described by her warm and welcoming smile. A fierce and loving mother, she raised all her daughters to be strong and independent. Her devotion as a wife as well as her invaluable support created a partnership through which her husband's professional career thrived. She was generous, hospitable, and many attest to her being a wonderful cook. She would many a time host her husband's graduate students and offer them the warm and delicious experience of home away from home and was known for her love, disarming grace, and contagious effervescence.
Professor Lin and his wife were married for 68 years. Together, they championed together a multitude of endeavors in education with unrelenting passion, diligence, and love. Working as a team, Professor Lin was the quintessential educator, assiduously dedicated to his lifelong craft alongside his loving wife who provided him and the family with comfort, unconditional love, and indispensable support . The Lins' devotion to education left an unfading mark on their four daughters, Jane, Della, Lucia and Winifred, along with the plethora of scholars who were under their mentorship.
