Under the mentorship of Dr Kalva and PhD student Hadise Pishdast undergraduate researchers Alejandro Aramburo, Joshua Reid, Luis Rodriguez-Baz, Phanold St. Croix and Ernesto Valdes Marquez presented at the Fall 2024 Senior Design Showcase and won the People's Choice Award.
Their Smart Wildlife Camera with AI/ML sponsored by the Organization of Tropical Studies (OTS) addresses the need for a cost-effective, durable camera trap tailored to conservation biology, particularly for monitoring meso- and megaherbivores. The project offers the conservation community a cost-effective and advanced tool for accurately tracking wildlife in their natural habitats.
By reducing false detections and optimizing for low power consumption, the smart camera system enhances biodiversity monitoring while minimizing the environmental and financial costs associated with traditional camera traps. This innovative solution empowers researchers and conservationists with more reliable data to support wildlife protection efforts.
