Dolby Laboratories Acquires MLab's Video Compression Tech Portfolio

Dolby Laboratories whose technologies have powered cinemas, streaming services, consumer electronics, and professional media production worldwide has acquired the video-compression technology portfolio developed by our researchers. This effort is championed by a long-standing research partnership with OP Solutions, LLC. This acquisition places FAU-developed technologies at the forefront of next-generation video delivery, streaming, broadcasting, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems worldwide.

The acquired portfolio consists of 683 Intellectual Property assets including 250 granted international patents and 73 U.S. patents invented by FAU researchers in the College of Engineering and Computer Science through research sponsored by OPS. At the core of this portfolio is technology that contributed to Versatile Video Coding (VVC) , alternatively known as H.266. VVC is the most advanced international standard for video compression that reduces video data requirements by approximately 50% while preserving visual quality. In addition, 16 U.S. patents from the portfolio have been declared essential to the VVC/H.266 standard.
