CEGE Students Receive Prestigious Air and Waste Management Association Awards

We are thrilled to announce that three CEGE graduate students received prestigious awards from the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA):

  • Sierra Mugan received the First-Place Master's Thesis Award for her research thesis, titled “Conversion of Orange Waste to Chemically Modified Activated Carbon Adsorbent Materials for Aqueous Phase Phosphate Removal”. She completed her master's studies under Dr. Jahandar Lashaki’s supervision in August 2025.
  • Dr. Vithulan Suthakaran won the Second-Place Doctoral Dissertation Award for his research, titled “Phosphorus Removal Using Novel Carbon Adsorbents Derived from Waste Algae: An Industrial Ecology Approach to Mitigate Algal Blooms”. He completed his PhD studies under the co-supervision of  Dr. Jahandar Lashaki and Dr. Meeroff in May 2025.
  • Laura Rojas received the Axel Hendrickson Scholarship as part of the AWMA Florida Section David Cooper Scholarship Award Program. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Transportation and Environmental Engineering working under the supervision of Dr. Jahandar Lashaki.
