We are thrilled to announce that four CEGE graduate students received prestigious awards at the 118th Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) Annual Conference and Exhibition held in Raleigh, NC (June 9-12). The research team would like to acknowledge the financial support provided by the Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management and FAU's Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatics Engineering for covering the associated travel expenses. The awards are as follows:
Laura Rojas received the First-place Poster Presentation Award at the Doctoral Level for her research on "Studying the Performance and Stability Characteristics of Triamine-Modified Mesoporous Silica Materials for CO2 Capture from Ambient Air." Laura obtained a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering (2023) and a master's degree in civil engineering (Water Resources and Environmental Engineering concentration area; 2024) from FAU. She is now a Ph.D. candidate in Transportation and Environmental Engineering working under the supervision of Dr. Jahandar Lashaki.
Brandyn Nutter won the Sustainability Research Related to Waste Management Scholarship for his research on "Converting Scrap Tire to Amine-Modified Activated Carbon Materials for Landfill Gas Upgrading". Brandyn obtained a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering (2022) and a master's degree in civil engineering (Water Resources and Environmental Engineering concentration area; 2023) from FAU. He is now a Ph.D. candidate in Transportation and Environmental Engineering working under the supervision of Dr. Jahandar Lashaki.
Sierra Mugan received the First-place Poster Presentation Award at the Master's Level for her research on "Conversion of Citrus Waste to Chemically Modified Activated Carbon Adsorbent Materials for Aqueous Phase Phosphate Removal". Sierra obtained a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from FAU in 2024, and is currently completing her master's studies in civil engineering (Water Resources and Environmental Engineering concentration area) under the supervision of Dr. Jahandar Lashaki.
Amirjavad Ahmadian Hosseini won the First-place Doctoral Dissertation Award for developing adsorbent materials for carbon dioxide capture from the ambient air and enclosed environments such as spacecraft and submarines. Amirjavad completed his PhD studies under Dr. Jahandar Lashaki’s supervision in August 2024.
