Publication Grant Program 

Program Overview

The ECOS Publication Grant Program provides financial support to current affiliates of the School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS) at Florida Atlantic University for open-access publication of peer-reviewed scholarly work based on research conducted within or in affiliation with ECOS. 

Awards are granted on a rolling basis, subject to funding availability. 

Eligible Activities

This grant supports open-access article processing charges (APCs) for peer-reviewed manuscripts where: 

  • The applicant is the first author or senior (corresponding) author.
  • The ECOS affiliation at Florida Atlantic University is listed in the manuscript's author affiliations as School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability
  • The research is based on work conducted at or in affiliation with ECOS. 

Eligibility

  • Graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.) enrolled at FAU and affiliated with ECOS 
  • Postdoctoral researchers affiliated with ECOS 
  • Faculty mentors are affiliates of ECOS 

Recently Graduated Students 

Faculty affiliates may apply on behalf of a recently graduated ECOS student (M.S. or Ph.D.) within two (2) years of the student's graduation date, provided: 

  • The student was an ECOS affiliate at the time the research was conducted.
  • The ECOS faculty member is a senior co-author.
  • The student meets all other authorship and eligibility requirements. 

Award Details

  • Amount up to $1,000 per eligible applicant per publication.
  • Up to two (2) ECOS-affiliated authors may each receive an award for the same publication, provided both qualify as first or senior authors.
  • No more than one (1) award per individual per calendar year.
  • Awards are subject to funding availability. Partial awards may be offered. 

Application Requirements

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and should be submitted to ecos@fau.edu

Each submission must include: 

  1. Applicant name, title, and FAU Z Number
  2. Graduate program or position and department
  3. Link to or PDF of the preprint, with ECOS affiliation clearly listed
  4. Manuscript title, target journal, and current submission status
  5. Estimated APC cost and itemized breakdown
  6. List of all other funding sources applied to or received for this publication
  7. Brief statement (1–2 paragraphs) on the significance of the research, the value of open-access publication, and the rationale for the selected journal
  8. Advisor or faculty sponsor statement of support (required for graduate students and recent graduates) 

Where two ECOS-affiliated authors are applying for the same publication, a single joint application is preferred. 

Policies

Authorship and Affiliation - The ECOS affiliation must appear in the published version of the manuscript. Awards may be rescinded if the affiliation is removed prior to publication. 

Allowable Expenses - Funds may only be used toward journal article processing charges. Page charges, color figure fees, and similar publication costs may be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

Post-Award Requirement 

Awardees must notify ECOS when the publication is available and provide us with a PDF for the article for our media and newsletter.
