Graduate Student Conference Travel Award 

Program Overview

The ECOS Graduate Student Conference Travel Award provides financial support for current M.S. and Ph.D. students affiliated with the School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS) at Florida Atlantic University to present their research at scientific conferences. The program supports student professional development and the dissemination of ECOS-affiliated research to the broader scientific community. 

Eligible Activities

Travel and registration costs for ECOS graduate students presenting at a scientific conference, including research talks, poster presentations, and symposia. Registration fees for virtual conferences where the student is presenting are also eligible. 

Eligibility

Applicants must: 

  • Be a currently enrolled, full-time M.S. or Ph.D. student in good academic standing and affiliated with ECOS. 
  • Be presenting at the conference (talk, poster, or symposium). 
  • Provide confirmation of abstract acceptance. 
  • Obtain and provide written advisor approval. 
  • Submit the application and all required documentation at least 45 business days prior to the conference start date. 

Award Details

  • Amount: Up to $1,000 per award. 
  • M.S. students are eligible for one (1) award over the course of their degree. 
  • Ph.D. students are eligible for up to two (2) awards over the course of their degree. 
  • Awards are subject to funding availability. Partial awards may be offered. 
  • Matching funds from internal or external sources are encouraged. 

Allowable Expenses

  • Conference registration 
  • Airfare 
  • Mileage (at FAU state rates) 
  • Lodging (most economical option; shared lodging encouraged when multiple students attend the same event) 
  • Parking and local transportation 
  • Poster printing 

Non-allowable Expenses 

  • Conference banquets or social events 
  • Conference merchandise
  • Field trips or excursions 

Application Requirements

Applications should be submitted to ecos@fau.edu at least 45 days before the conference start date. Each submission must include: 

  1. Applicant name 
  2. Graduate program and year of study 
  3. Confirmation of abstract acceptance (talk, poster, or symposium) 
  4. Advisor statement of support and approval 
  5. 1–2 paragraphs describing the conference, the nature of the presentation, and benefits to the student's professional development and to ECOS 
  6. Brief justification of estimated costs and details of  other sources of financial support applied to or received 

Policies

Post-Award Requirement - Awardees must notify ECOS upon return and provide a brief summary and photo for the ECOS newsletter.
