Art of Science: 7 Years Celebrating Science Through Art

Veteran Jurors Bring Vision, Expertise to Art of Science

Since the inception of the Art of Science contest, Katherine Frazier-Jones and Gabby McHenry, Ph.D., have brought their unique expertise and passion to the judging panel. Their continued involvement reflects a deep commitment to showcasing how creativity and research intersect, making science both accessible and inspiring. With backgrounds in storytelling, communication and scientific outreach, they have helped shape the contest into a platform that celebrates the beauty and wonder of discovery year after year.

Katherine Frazier-Jones

Katherine Frazier-Jones is the director of communications in Florida Atlantic University’s College of Social Work and Criminal Justice. She is a well-versed writer, content creator and communications specialist – spending much of her career working closely with equally talented artists and designers.

"The long paragraphs of dark text on white paper made me want to dig deeper into the data … said no one ever," Frazier-Jones said. "We humans are visual creatures, and our eyes are naturally attracted to shapes and colors. Whether it be beautiful photography, well-designed charts, or engaging graphics, compelling imagery brings data to life."

Frazier-Jones’ eye for photography, graphic design and other digital media is incredibly sharp. She has planned and produced photography shoots for national advertising campaigns, so she deeply understands visual storytelling and what makes an image compelling.

Gabby McHenry, Ph.D.

Gabby McHenry, Ph.D., is the Director of Education and Outreach at Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Dr. McHenry has over 15 years of experience with marine science, education, science communication and community engagement, and over the last nine years, she has led the strategic expansion of FAU Harbor Branch’s public programs.

Dr. McHenry is a firm believer and advocate for ensuring that science reaches, inspires and engages with everyone in the community – especially those underrepresented in STEM fields. Outside work, she enjoys creating ocean-inspired art and is an avid silversmith, painter and photographer. She has even traveled 3,000 feet below the surface aboard FAU Harbor Branch’s Johnson Sea-Link submersible.

"Nature is very intricate, and scientists investigate these intricacies at a deeper level," she said. "Researchers at FAU study so many things, from a single, tiny cell to a complex coral reef, and make amazing discoveries daily."
