Art of Science: Returning Voices of Experience

Judges Bring Creativity, Leadership and Insight to the Art of Science Contest for the Second Year

The Art of Science contest celebrates the intersection of creativity and discovery, where scientific ideas are transformed into striking visual narratives through photography and videography.

Two returning judges for the 2025 competition, Marva White, Graduate College, and Rupert Rhodd, Ph.D., College of Business, bring their professional expertise and passion for education, storytelling and innovation to the panel. Their diverse perspectives help ensure that the works submitted are not only evaluated for their artistic merit, but also for the clarity and imagination with which they communicate the beauty of science.

Marva White

Marva White, associate director of marketing and communications for the Graduate College at Florida Atlantic University, helps shape messaging that connects students, faculty and the broader community. With years of experience in marketing and communications, she has a unique appreciation for how stories can be told across different mediums.

For White, art provides an avenue to capture the imagination and transform abstract ideas into something tangible. She values the ability of artwork to take concepts often reserved for textbooks and journals and present them in a way that resonates universally. This balance of creativity and clarity is what excites her about judging the Art of Science contest.

“My creative experience from marketing will provide grounds in assessing how artwork explains scientific concepts in a creative way,” White said. “Which I believe is important when evaluating turning science into art.”

Rupert Rhodd, Ph.D.

Rupert Rhodd, Ph.D., associate dean of the College of Business at Florida Atlantic University, combines academic leadership with a passion for education. With decades of experience shaping young minds, he is deeply committed to helping students connect theoretical economic concepts to real-world contexts. His contributions to the Art of Science contest bring this same thoughtful perspective to the evaluation of creative work.

Beyond the university, Rhodd remains deeply engaged in community and cultural work. He co-chairs the Coalition of Jamaican Alumni Associations of Florida — a collective representing 55 groups — and serves on the City of Parkland Advisory Board, among other civic roles.

For Rhodd, the Art of Science competition is a way to pause and recognize the inherent beauty in scientific exploration. “The Art of Science contest brings together photography, video and science in a manner that is truly beautiful and amazing,” Rhodd said. “The still images and videos cause one to pause and think about the beauty of nature.”
