FAU Launches Workforce Innovations Network (WIN) with VIP Listening Session in Broward County

March 14 event convenes local leaders to shape the future of workforce development

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) officially launched a Workforce Innovations Network (WIN) initiative in Broward County after a ‘listening session’ of leaders from the region’s businesses, nonprofits and government sectors focused on the future of workforce development.

Colin Polsky, Ph.D., associate vice president for FAU’s three Broward campuses and professor of geosciences, opened the event by stressing the university’s commitment to increasing its presence and impact in the county. He introduced FAU’s new president, Adam Hasner, who delivered his first remarks in Broward since assuming leadership.

President Hasner shared his excitement about the university’s future and emphasized FAU’s recent designation as an R1 research university, a significant milestone that recognizes the university’s high-level research activity. He also discussed his early efforts to connect with the university’s six campuses and highlighted Broward County as a critical hub for FAU’s growth. In particular, he noted the importance of aligning the university’s academic programming with South Florida’s regional strengths, especially in the ocean economy and artificial intelligence.

The heart of the session focused on identifying both strengths and gaps in the current workforce. Attendees gave the region’s technical skill levels a median score of three out of five, while transferable (sometimes called soft) skills such as communication, critical thinking and curiosity were rated lower, with a median score of two out of five. These ratings prompted a wide-ranging discussion on the importance of cross-training, mentorship and better alignment between educational institutions and industry needs.

Participants also explored the growing demand for flexible, specialized training in emerging sectors, expressing strong interest in industry-led micro-credential programs created and delivered by the university. Many emphasized the need for higher education institutions to be responsive to evolving job market demands by offering training that is both relevant and accessible to learners of all ages and backgrounds.

In addition to job readiness, the conversation turned toward the broader role of universities in cultivating civic responsibility and purpose among students. Participants emphasized the value of integrating stewardship into academic curricula, stressing the importance of civil discourse, community engagement and a sense of responsibility as essential elements of a well-rounded education.

The event concluded with remarks from both Polsky and President Hasner, who expressed deep appreciation for the insights shared and reaffirmed FAU’s commitment to working together with the Broward community. The session also included the introduction of Torey Alston, the new president of Broward College, signaling a growing spirit of collaboration between the two institutions.

With this listening session, FAU’s WIN initiative takes its first step by doing just that — listening. The ideas and feedback gathered will help shape the university’s strategic approach to workforce development, ensuring it remains connected to the needs and aspirations of the communities it serves.
