R1 Status Recognition
Florida Atlantic University Faculty Earn Distinguished Researcher Award
Research Park at Florida Atlantic recently named the faculty of Florida Atlantic University as the 2025 recipients of the Distinguished Researcher Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions, which earned the university national R1 recognition.
R1, as determined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, is the highest designation a university can receive for research activity. FAU shares this status with less than 5% of the nearly 4,000 universities in the United States.
Research Park is a hub where businesses have access to tools, connections and support needed to drive technology-driven economic development. Its’ annual award honors an individual or organization whose research has demonstrated outstanding achievement and societal benefit.
"Florida Atlantic's research faculty have made important contributions to our understanding of topics from cryptography and AI to exercise science and education, all of which have improved the human condition and added to South Florida's regional economic success," said Andrew S. Duffell, president of Research Park.
The Distinguished Researcher Award is part of Research Park’s annual awards event, which recognizes excellence in research, innovation and economic development across the South Florida region. The award also reflects the partnership between Florida Atlantic University and the Research Park.
"The Research Park is proud to celebrate the university's R1 designation and to connect our entrepreneurs to the university for mutual benefit,” Duffell said.
