Federal Shutdown Guidance

2025 Federal Government Shutdown – General Information

In anticipation of a government shutdown starting October 1, 2025, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) in the Division of Research is providing guidance on proposal submissions and award administration.

To assist during this time, here is general information pertaining to proposal submissions and award administration. As always, each sponsor is different and any specific guidance from a sponsor takes precedence.

  1. Proposal Submissions:
    1. Proposals should continue to be submitted based on the solicitation proposal submission deadline.
    2. During a shutdown proposal review by the sponsor will be delayed, but they will be reviewed upon continued operations.
  1. Active Awards:
    1. Awards that were issued to FAU prior to the shutdown that have remaining available funds, and the ending date has not lapsed, may continue, unless your award requires government oversight.
      1. In the past, for awards (mostly contracts) that cannot be continued during a shutdown, the sponsor has issued a “Stop Work Order”. If you receive such documentation, please forward to sponsoredprograms@fau.edu immediately.
    2. New awards, continuations, supplements, renewals, no cost extension, etc., will most likely not be issued during a shutdown.
Federal Agencies Shutdown Plans

All federal agencies are required to develop and maintain plans for an orderly shutdown in the event of a lapse in federal appropriations. A list of each agencies plan can be found on the COGR website: https://www.cogr.edu/considerations-federal-government-shutdown

From the agency plans, we extracted information from the most common agencies.
