Gabriela Rodríguez-Fuentes, Ph.D.

Dr. Gabriela Rodríguez-Fuentes served as the inaugural WLW-ECOS Professor-in-Residence from August 2025 to February 2026. She is a full-time professor at the Unidad de Química en Sisal, Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where she has been on faculty since 2011. She also served as chair of the Unit of Chemistry in Sisal for 11 years.
An ecotoxicologist specializing in the effects of toxic substances on aquatic environments, Dr. Rodríguez-Fuentes has over 20 years of experience working with biomarkers for environmental monitoring and more than 15 years studying oxidative stress responses in marine organisms. Her research examines stress caused by chemical, physical, and biological factors, spanning work with organisms from bacteria to plants.
During her residency at FAU, she conducted workshops on oxidative stress techniques, taught introductory statistics, and guest lectured across the university. Her sabbatical focused on fostering long-term research collaborations between the Yucatan Peninsula and Florida.
Dr. Rodríguez-Fuentes' work addresses the critical need to understand how pollution affects ecosystems, helping communities make informed decisions to reduce environmental impacts and adapt to changing conditions.
