The Galleries in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present two exhibitions this fall on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road: “Art Amidst Darkness: Holocaust Testimonies from the Yad Vashem Collection” and “A Century of Jews in Boca Raton: History, Community, Legacy.”

“Art Amidst Darkness” will run Thursday, Oct. 16, through Thursday, Nov. 27, in the Schmidt Gallery public space. An opening reception is set for Oct. 16 at 6:15 p.m., followed by the lecture “Art from the Holocaust Featuring Liz Elsby” at 7:15 p.m. The exhibition and lecture are free and open to the public; registration is required for the reception at fau.edu/pjhr/chhre.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Arthur and Emalie Gutterman Family Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education and the University Galleries. Created between 1939 and 1945, the works come from the Yad Vashem Collection and serve as living testimony from the Holocaust. The exhibition offers a glimpse into art produced in ghettos, camps, forests and while in hiding.

“A Century of Jews” will run Monday, Oct. 27, through Sunday, Dec. 14. An opening reception is planned for Oct. 27 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The cultural celebration traces the history and contributions of Boca Raton’s Jewish community over the past 100 years. Through photographs, performances, documents and personal narratives, the exhibition explores the cultural, social and economic impact of Jewish residents, from early settlers to today’s thriving community. Highlighting stories of resilience, activism and tradition, it reflects on the evolving identity of Jewish life in South Florida and its influence on the region’s history.

A ticketed reception associated with the exhibition will be held Oct. 27 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The evening will feature live music, vintage cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and 1920s-inspired décor. Tickets are $45 and available at the FAU Box Office
