Florida Atlantic University’s School of Architecture is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Maria Gonzalez as Assistant Professor and Director of the Microbial Assemblies Lab, who has joined us as of the Fall 2025 semester.

Gonzalez brings a dynamic interdisciplinary vision to FAU, merging architectural research with biomaterials, microbial design, and experimental fabrication practices. Her work investigates how living systems can inform new approaches to building skins, material performance, and environmentally responsive design. With experience spanning academic research, studio teaching, and collaborative design projects, she will deepen the school’s inquiry into the future of sustainable and adaptive architecture.

As Director of the newly established Microbial Assemblies Lab, Gonzalez will lead research, workshops, and student collaborations exploring the architectural potential of microbial communities, bio-grown materials, and regenerative practices. The lab will serve as a platform for innovation, bridging science, engineering, and design while preparing students to engage with emerging ecological technologies.

The School of Architecture warmly welcomes Professor Gonzalez and looks forward to the impactful scholarship, creative leadership, and new opportunities her presence will bring to our students and community.
