Study Habits for College Students

While it may be surprising to hear, I get excited for the semester to start. I am talking about a “kid in a candy store” type of excitement. When it comes to the new semester, I look forward to coffee study dates, being productive in the library, color-coding my Google calendar, and listening to countless playlists while I work. I guess you could say that I like to embrace my inner Rory Gilmore, Paris Geller, Spencer Hastings, and Elle Woods. Over the years, I have learned how to make my studying and productivity fun and enjoyable, so that it becomes something to look forward to.

Hopefully by sharing some of my tips and tricks, it will inspire you to be excited as well!

One of the best ways to get started  is to create an attractive studying environment. For me, when I’m in my room, I’ll sit at my desk, light a couple of candles, play music, and keep my phone at arm’s length. However, I also love getting out of the confines of my room for a change of scenery and an excuse to dress up. A great alternative is a coffee shop, whether it be a small family-owned one like Crux–a WHC must–or part of a chain like Panera, there is nothing like free wifi, a sweet treat, and being surrounded by other working individuals. Similarly, the library is also a great place to study and do work–while also engaging in the occasional people-watching.

Even with a perfectly-set environment, however, it can be hard to stay focused and lock-in. During times like these, I find it helpful to find a study partner. They do not necessarily have to help you study, I just find their presence valuable. Looking up to see my friend working on her own stuff, motivates me to do the same. If no one is available, a similar effect can be achieved by scrolling through StudyTok or watching “Study with me” videos on YouTube. I will provide a disclaimer though, sometimes introducing other people to your environment may serve as a distraction more than an inspiration.

With all this said, you are almost ready for a good study session! Here are some other tips to keep in mind:

  • Make a to-do list
  • Create flashcards
  • Reward yourself and take reasonable breaks
  • Remember you goals, remember what you are working towards
