Sharing on behalf of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute.

On Thursday, December 18th at 6pm at Coastal Karma Brewery, the Brain Institute will be hosting its own Dr. Paula Gajewski to give a speech on the subject of science literacy and interpretation in media. This talk is a part of the “Brains Explained” series, a collection of talks given by neuroscience researchers to give anyone free access to the current research happening at FAU.

Dr. Gajewski is a research assistant professor at the Stiles Nicholson Brain Institute at the FAU Honors College. She teaches Human Morphology and Function, and her main area of research is neuroscience. Her work focuses on neuroimmunology, which examines the mechanisms of inflammation in the body and its influence in the brain, specifically how it contributes to psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety.

She will take the audience through a discussion on scientific literacy, and how it helps us navigate a world filled with information. Scientific literacy provides the tools to evaluate evidence, question claims, and make informed decisions, especially in a world filled with people trying to make sense of news, health, and technology. Dr. Gajewski will discuss how the core topics of her research in neuroimmunology and scientific literacy help nurture an understanding of the connections between the various approaches of mental health and its treatment.

Summary of Dr. Gajewski’s work and topic were given directly by Dr. Gajewski through email.
