Medical Student Publication and Presentation Authorship
Authorship should be discussed in advance of beginning a research project with all persons involved. We strongly advise students and their mentors use the COM mentor-mentee agreement which will assist in the discussion of expectations for both the student and mentor. Students should NOT expect authorship on publications and presentations in return for their participation in research. Please refer to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations on authorship criteria.
Please also re-review the CITI Responsible Conduct for Research (RCR) training course (completed first semester M1), which covers many important research topics including collaborative research, mentoring, peer review, plagiarism, research misconduct and authorship.
Author affiliation provides recognition to both the author and their associated institution(s). Therefore, please be sure while you are matriculating in the college that you always affiliate with the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University.
Please use the following author affiliation:
Your Name, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University
If you participated in research outside of FAU, please consult with your external research mentor as to whether you should affiliate with FAU COM only, or also with the external institution.
1Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University
2External Institution Name and College/School/Department
In addition, any research conducted while you were a FAU medical student that may be disseminated after you leave FAU should cite your current institution and previous FAU affiliation.
1Current Institution Name and College/School/Department
2Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University
Please consult your research mentor and summer research fast track coordinator (as applicable) to confirm whether additional affiliations, acknowledgments and/or funding/support language is necessary.
