Research Programs
At Charles E Schmidt College of Medicine, we have a broad-ranging team of physicians and scientists who collaborate to develop groundbreaking patient-centered research strategies. Our research programs focus on:
- Healthy aging
- Geriatrics
- Neuroscience
- Chronic Pain and Opioid Use
- Genomics and Precision Medicine
We use collaborative and multi-disciplinary approaches to uncover basic biological mechanisms and cultivate new strategies to combat disease.
Engaging in Research
We encourage students and faculty to engage in research initiatives and participate in our research programs. Our research programs provide students and faculty with the opportunity to work with world-class scientists and gain experience in cutting-edge research. We offer a range of educational and training opportunities within our academic programs, as well as additional lectures and mentorship programs.
Cores and Shared Services
Our research facilities are supported by cutting-edge cores and shared services that provide access to a range of specialized equipment and technologies. Some of our cores and shared services include:
- Genomics Core Facility
- Proteomics Core Facility
- Imaging Core Facility
- Histology Core Facility
- Animal Facilities
- Biostatistics Core
- Flow Cytometry Core Facility
These cores and shared services support the research programs at Charles E Schmidt College of Medicine and provide an outstanding experience for our students and faculty.
Research Funding
Our research is recognized through significant funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and other funding agencies. This recognition enables us to invest in state-of-the-art equipment to support our dedicated laboratory space of over 15,000 sq ft. Our research facilities are also generously supported by the Schmidt Family Endowment Fund and State University System Excellence Funds.
Trials and Studies
At Florida Atlantic University, clinical trials and studies are run through the Division of Research's Clinical Research Unit. Studies are conducted to help investigators translate research findings into clinical practice. Trials and studies focus on diseases and conditions that affect the health of our communities, such as cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders. For a list of active studies please visit the CRU's website. Faculty interested in conducting clinical research trials and studies can find more information on the Clinical Research Unit website.
Join Our Community
We prioritize collaborative research initiatives in which basic, translational, and clinical researchers work together across disciplines and specialties to discover fundamental insights into human health and disease. Through our partnerships with prestigious local research institutions, such as The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology, and the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, we provide exciting and diverse opportunities to gain experience working with world-class scientists.
If you are an interested student, faculty, or researcher, we invite you to join our community and contribute to our groundbreaking research programs and initiatives that aim to improve healthcare outcomes for everyone, everywhere.
