Margaret Devine

Executive Secretary | School of Architecture

Margaret Devine is the Executive Secretary of FAU’s School of Architecture, a position she has held since October 2003. She is responsible for assisting the Director as well as the school’s faculty and students. She is also responsible for receiving visitors, answering questions, and directing them to the proper university resources. Devine began her career at FAU in 1998, first in the Controller's Office, then in the Office of International Programs. "I have valued my friendships with coworkers in each office and working with students" Devine said. "Students bring me such joy, keeping me young at heart."

Devine said that her favorite memories from her time with the School of Architecture include the field trip to Savannah, Georgia and the Everglades with Professor Deirdre Hardy and the field trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico with Dr. Jean Martin Caldieron. "I also love the pumpkin carvings that the students do each October and the annual event in which the professors allow the students to throw pies at them." Devine chose to work at FAU because she had participated in a couple of temporary agency assignments and enjoyed the experience. She also attended the Legal Assistant program, which was offered by the former Division of Continuing Education. "Attendance allowed me to acquaint myself a little more with FAU. This all led to my wanting to explore permanent work opportunities at FAU."

A 1979 graduate of Marquette University with a bachelor’s in dental hygiene, Devine also studied for two years at the graduate level at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the Health Care Administration program. "I did not rule dental hygiene out as a future career path, but as time passed, I felt quite comfortable at FAU and ceased to think about returning to the dental field." Devine was born in Washington, DC and her father was in the U.S. Foreign Service. Her family moved to Lisbon, Portugal when she was five-years-old and then to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic when she was eight. At age 12 the family moved to Caracas, Venezuela and returned to Washington, DC three years later. She then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend Marquette University. She stayed in Milwaukee until 1989 and decided to follow her parents when they moved to South Florida.

During her free time Devine, who lives in Highland Beach, enjoys baking, reading, watching films, and going on cruises.
