A Brown Bag Talk with Prof. Papatya Bucak
Context-Building: On Writing the Sociological Short Story (Or Essay, Or Poem)
Wednesday, October 12th | 12:00pm | Zoom

Please save the date for our first Brown Bag talk of the Fall 2022 semester!  It will be held on Wednesday, October 12 at 12 noon—via Zoom. Professor Papatya Bucak will deliver a talk titled “Context-Building: On Writing the Sociological Short Story (Or Essay, Or Poem).”

In a contemporary world that increasingly erases context, and therefore nuance, writers need to ask what contexts their writing might be accidentally erasing. Tips like “show don’t tell” and “write what you know” sometimes lead to writing that lacks a bigger picture. This lecture will be a craft-based look at how to deepen your writing by actively building larger contexts around character, setting, and plot. The focus will be on short stories but the discussion will be relevant to novelists, poets and nonfiction writers as well.
