Schmidt Gallery Exhibit Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials
Tuesday, Mar 10, 2026
Marking the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Nuremberg Trials after World War II, FAU’s Schmidt Gallery recently hosted an exhibit of the art of Nathan Hilu, an American Jewish soldier who guarded the Nazis at the 1945-1946 Nuremberg Trials. A friend of Comparative Studies PhD student J essica Spitalnic, the late Nathan Hilu, never truly recovered from guarding those Nazis. His art becomes a way to live that experience with him and to question how we can provide an enduring assessment of historical events through our own lives.
The event was curated by Schmidt Gallery staff and students in conjunction with the Arthur and Emalie Gutterman Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center, and the exhibit opened on January 12, 2026.
A special reception and screening of the documentary about Nathan Hilu, NATHAN-ism, took place on Thursday, January 29, 2026, in the Schmidt Family Gallery.
