Big Sibling Advice for College: Advice for the First-Time College Student

by Emily Peraza | Thursday, Sep 07, 2023

For many students, this fall marks the first semester out of the house, and even in college! Even with dual enrollment experience, being away for college is a very different experience. However, these upcoming months will be full of new friends, growth, and a fresh perspective on things! It may be daunting, but it is an experience that will build you up and allow you to be independent and successful. Here at FAU Thrive, we have a few tips and some reassurance for you.

  1. Accept change. Unfortunately, it is inevitable that things will change, and will continue to change. Take these changes in friend groups, environment, and workload with grace.
  2. Reach out if you need something! There are a range of programs you can take part in, from tutoring to health services. On campus, many courses offer free tutoring with hours online (or even shared by the professor), and there are office hours! Do not be afraid to ask academic questions to peers too! Everyone on campus wants to see you thrive. There is also CAPS, the Counseling and Psychological Services, as well as an on-campus clinic. Please take care of yourselves if you feel sick by giving them a heads-up.
  3. Do not bury yourselves in work, but do not let the freedom get to your head. The goal here is tough love, sadly. Go on walks, go out for food every so often, watch television, do whatever you need to do to feel at home here. However, do not let this get out of hand and neglect to do your work. College can be stressful, but it can also be the greatest time of your life with balance.
  4. Get involved! There are SO many clubs and organizations you can get involved in! Not only does FAU have plenty of RSOs (registered student organizations), but also jobs on campus. Check out positions in the Burrow, residence halls, dining hall, etc. If you do really well in a class, you may even be asked to be a TA or tutor!
    1. Putting yourself out there also helps you be part of a group with common interests. Joining organizations you enjoyed in high school is amazing, but new ones are also amazing for finding new passions and meeting new people!
    2. Following FAU - specifically WHC - accounts on Instagram will help keep you in the loop! Some accounts that many Jupiter students follow are: @faujuppb @jupfausg @faujupiterlib @faujupsavi @theburrow_whc_ and of course, @fau_thrive!

Some additional advice from fellow Owls:

  • Don’t be afraid to branch out!
  • Get help early if something is difficult or if you are struggling! You’ll thank yourself in the future.
  • Attend campus events and join Registered Student Organizations. There are clubs and groups for every interest you have, including marine biology, dance, psychology, volunteering, pre-medical studies, crafting, gaming, and so much more!
  • Take time often to make small memories with friends!

Lastly, reach out if you ever need help. College is a completely new experience for many and it can be isolating at times. However, students and professors alike want to see you happy and successful. It is okay to not be okay. Get help when you need it. See you around, Owls!
