The Space in Us

The Space in Us

Photography by Veronika Zaloginova, Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College

In a morphology laboratory, the researcher took images of stained epithelial layers of skin that reminded them of distant planets floating in space. The beauty of these slides lies not only in their unique and mysterious patterns but also in the intricate functions they represent. Each cell, which looks like an abstract painting under the microscope, plays a crucial role in protecting our bodies and absorbing nutrients, vital to our survival. The researcher wanted to juxtapose these microscopic structures with the vast immensity of space. This was a series of three images that were captured with a light microscope and used pre-made epithelial slides, then edited using Picsart.
