Interpreting the IRB Letter

  • Once the IRB has approved your study, you will receive a notice of approval to your IRB Novelution registered email. It is important to read that approval letter to understand any requirements or limitations of your approval.
  • IRB letters have different meanings depending on the ACTION line. Carefully read your IRB letter to learn whether your research does not fall within the IRB’s purview, whether you can begin your research or whether modifications are required.
  • If Modifications are Required, watch the Responding to Modifications video or read the Responding to Modifications guide.
  • Watch the Board Documents video or read the Board Documents guide for more information on your IRB letter.
  • See the Review Categories and Determinations to learn more about your study’s review category.
  • IRB Letters are saved in the IRB Correspondence panel of your study as well as sent to you via email from the Novelution system.
  • Other IRB approved materials such as consents may be accessed through IRB Novelution. Download and/or print the stamped approved materials to use for your research. Once the IRB has approved your study you can begin your research.
