A Night of Tango Music and Dance
by FAU College of Arts and Letters | Wednesday, Oct 08, 2014
The Quinteto Leopoldo Federico, an ensemble dedicated to the preservation, advancement and education of tango music, along with tango dancers Gina & Iván, will be performing at Florida Atlantic University on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The quintet will perform representative pieces from the tango repertoire including works from Astor Piazzola and new compositions and arrangements from their upcoming album.
The Quinteto Leopoldo Federico was formed in 2011 by musicians from Bogotá, Colombia with wide experience in a variety of musical genres. The musicians include Alberto Tamayo (piano), Miguel Angel Guevara (violin), Kike Harker (contrabass), Francisco Avellaneda (electric guitar) and Giovanni Parra (bandoneon). The bandoneon, an accordion-like instrument from Germany, is central to the sound of tango and is masterfully played by Giovanni Parra, the director of the ensemble. Parra studied with the tango legends Leopoldo Federico and Nestor Marconi and is regarded as a master of the instrument.
The Quinteto Leopoldo Federico is quickly establishing itself as a leading proponent of tango, having already shared the stage with tango experts such as Fernando Suarez Paz, violinist in Astor Piazzola's quintet, and Daniel Binelli, widely acclaimed as the foremost exponent and torchbearer of the music of Astor Piazzolla. Following their performance in Boca Raton, the group will be recording a full-length album for Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, FAU's record label.
