Please join us on Wednesday 10/26 at 11:00 in CU 321 for a WGSS Brown Bag Presentation by Dr. Luisa Turbino Torres: “The Politics of Being a Soccer Fan: Feminist Organizing Around Soccer in Brazil.”  Dr. Turbino Torres is a new Assistant Professor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Political Science. She specializes in transnational feminist politics, activism, and social movements, culture and politics, and Latin American domestic and international politics. She employs interpretivist methodologies and explores how power dynamics present in different cultural spaces have effects that go beyond the individuals and feed into many systems of oppression. This current project is based on 2 years of digital ethnography, interviews, and archival work, and looks at the feminist activism that has been emerging around soccer in recent years, how they challenge the masculine dominance in soccer spaces and how it connects to a broader political agenda.
